Prospect School hosted a Club
Day for the 8lh grade students. The
school invited representatives from
Purncll Swett and Red Springs to
share information about their clubs
This gave the upcoming 9th graders
a chance to get upclosc and personal
look at the clubs these two schools

A pilot embryology was just
recently completed by Ms
Gwendolyn Locklcar's third grade
students The materials were
provided by the Robeson County 4H
Extension Agency and North
Carolina Slate University
An incubator was delivered by
Mrs Nahir Hunt. 4-H Extension
Agent The temperature was
established at 99 5 degrees which is
required for proper development
On the following day. Mrs Hunt

brought IS fernli/cd eggs and put
them into l he incubator for a 21 -dav
period

(H) baby chicks were born to Mrs
Gwendolyn's students They were
very excited and at the same lime
very relieved Each day students
eared for the eggs by turning back
and forth to prevent embryo from
sticking to their shells This was
done b> mark i ng eggs on either side
with an X' and an " O '. Also by
maintaining a temperature of 99 5
degrees and checking the humidity
in the incubator, eggs continued to
develop properly
Even though all eggs did not
hatch, students enjoyed the
embryology project and said thev
would lovf to try it next year
Petting Zoo
Prospect School's students in
grades PrcK-3 enjoyed a visit front
the Sunbeam Petting Farm ow ned
by Michelle Patterson. The /.oo was
housed on the playground in three
sections: sheep shearing, goat
milking and a petting zoo
Mrs. Patterson talked to students
about the importance of Firming

demonstrated shearing of the sheep
goat milking and allowed students
to feed the animals in the petting
zoo.

Our classes were able to tour all
the unique animals; camel, giraffe
snakes. Ii/ards. gorilla, elephant,
bald eagle, tiger, birds, polar bear
seals, lions, zebra, ducks, fish,
turtles, pigs, rabbits, sea horses,
alligators, to name just a few of the
animals thc> were able to see The
children visited the lemonade
stands, icc-crcam parlors and the
gift shops before exiling the zoo
Tnc journey home was a
pleasant one The students arrived
back on campus before 6:30p m

driver for the group, and she w as an
excellent driver
D.A.R.E. (iraduation
The D A R E. (Drug Abuse
Resistance Education) program isa
project that was originated by the
Los Angeles Police Dept to prevent
drug abuse in children and youth
Recognizing that there arc many
factors that influence students to
experiment with various drugs.
D A R E, offers other alternativ es.
This past October. Prospect School
was selected to participate in the
D ARE program. They
were the first school chosen by the
Robeson County ShcrifTs Dept
D A R E. instructor Deputy Bruce
Hunt has taught Prc-K-6th grade
students how to rccogni/.cand resist
the many subtle pressures that
influence them to try drugs His
alternative methods to using drugs,
help students build self-esteem,
interpersonal and communication
skillsand positive decision making
techniques On May 8th. the
D A R E, curriculum students in
grades 5th and 6tb participated in
the D A.R.E. graduation exercise
They received certificates for their
active participation in the D.A.R.E.
program.

Prom
On May 3rd. Prospect School
held their Prom for the students in
grades 6-8 in the school gym. The
theme for the Prom was Celestial
Fantasy Faculty and staff were
guests of the students. Everyone
had a good time!

The All-County Band Festival
was held at Robeson .Community
College on February 25 and/24.
1996 with a formal band
performance held on the 24th. The
festival was a huge success _

On Saturday. February 10.
1996 two Prospect Band Students
traveled to Slcdman Junior High
School in Fayettcville. NC to
audition forlheNprth'Carolina AllDistrict
Band. The N.C. AllDistrict
Band consists of students
from the counties of Robeson.
Cumberland. Columbus. Bladen.
Hoke. Moore. Scotland, and
Brunswick. Approximately 500
students auditioned for the band
but only approximately 150 were
chosen to perform. The following
students from Prospect School made
the N.C. All-District Band:

Abigail Barton - Trumpet
The N.C. All-District Band
Festival was hcldon the weekend of
February 16.1996 It ended with a
formal concert on Sunday. February
18.1996 which was fantastic. Let's
hope that these two students arc the
first of many, many more Prospect
Students to receive the honor of
performing in the N.C. All-District
Band!!!
