Who Am I? by Erwin Jacobs Well. Hello again and a Happy SJew Yeartoall. Thebellshavetolled. People who had said the world would end have been proven wrong again, od is still much alive and is definitely still in charge of everything But of l.ucifcr is very busy claiming all he can. As the year 2000 was drawing rapidly to an end every day on television, radio and the newspaper there were many tragic stories tord about the young and old alikelives being taken by guns. dope, speeding and self inflicted wounds. Many who saw the year 2000 did not live to see this year. Satan will rob you of your life, if you do not have Jesus as your Savior and put your trust in God. This article will be comprised of several segments. Today is January 2nd and it is early in the morning. There is so much to say even though it is very cold, the urge is still very strong to get my message across to you, my loyal readers. I thank you all for your words of encouragement about my articles in the Indian Voice. Tonight I plan to attend a meeting at Prospect United Methodist Church about how we can reach out to our youth. So I will put my pen aside until after the meeting tonight to share with you what was said and done concerning this situation. I do hope many mothers and fathers attend this meeting. Over the holidays I visited Ms. Connee Brayboy and she is still grieving over the loss of her son, Dennis. We must have compassion for one another, especially those who have had one of their loved one's lives taken away from them, regardless of the cruel method and circumstances. There is an old gospel song that keeps coming to mind. It goes like this: "If I could help somebody as I go along my way, then my living shall not be in vain." Tonight is the wee hours of the fourth. Yes, I attended the meeting at Prospect. I took along my note pad but I did not take many notes. It looked I ike there would be very few out to the meeting as I arrived in front of the church around 6:30 p m. Christmas songs were blaring from the loud speakers atop the old sanctuar> The doors were locked, so I left for a brief time to visit Rev. Bobby Locklear's family near by to wish them a happy new year and chat a few minutes. When I returned the parking lot was almost full with vans from many churches, several sheri ff s deputy cars and a van from Palmer Drug Abuse Program were included. I guess I was the only one from the media present so 1 curtailed my news report as to what was to be said and done at the meeting. Everyone was received and welcomed by the Reverend H arold J acobs. Music Director of Prospect United Methodist Church, at 7 p.m. sharp. He started with a short skit, (conversation between a young teenager and his parents.) He then read from the Holy Bible. Verses from Psalms Chapter 48 and 49. (I urge you to take time and read the first several verses of these Psalms.) There were many lives lost within the last few years due to drugs and alcohol, also reckless speeding on the highways and rural roads. During the holidays two young men locally lost their lives and a call was put out that the communities must meet and see w hat can be done about same. We are long overdue facing this situation and voicing our opinions for a solution to such tragedies. A candle was lit for young Miles Brewington and 19 year old Chad, a rising freshman at UNC Pembroke who died in a car accident. Rev. Jacobs commented that a card was found at the scene of the accident that had been given to him. The card said" WWJD" (What would Jesus do?) I can say this, drugs, speed, alcohol, and cars will kill you folks. I am told maybe he fell asleep at the wheel. In attendance at the meeting were Robeson County High Sheriff Glenn Maynor and District Attorney Johnson Britt. The Director of the Palmer Drug Abuse Program of Lumberton spoke at the meeting. After which the young people were directed to a room for counseling by several spiritual counselors. Sheriff Maynor introduced Mr. James Hunt of Fairmont who had been shot three t imes by people breaking the law. He was given a loud applause by the audience. Many topics were discussed and questions asked by those who were concerned and wanted to know about the habits facing the areas represented. The meeting was such a success that there will be another on the 20tK of February on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. at the church. If you are reading this article, I urge you to skip television that night, pack up your youth and head towards Prospect United Methodist Church to the planned meeting and participate in this worthy effort to Find solutions to the crisis we are facing. Didyouknowthat Robeson County is the largest county in North Carolina? Come see what you can do to help make it a much safer place for us to live and enjoy life and the pursuit of happiness. But most of all, respect starts at home. Not at school. Talk to your youth. Get them up Sundays and taken them to a house of worship. I hope 1 have shed some more light on"WholAm."God loves you. I love you. So until next time, peace, love, joy and do let your light shine that others will see Christ in you. This article is written in memory of Ms. Connee Brayboy's son. Comments?
