? It was back in October that the Public Schools of Robeson County began a new training program for our principals whose purpose it is to improve academic achievement and to strengthen curriculum leadership abilities. While the school system is constantly looking for ways to accomplish these goals, the Principals' Leadership Training Program- as the program is calledis rather unique in the way it'srnnducled. All of our principals are provided with a number of books which provide them with insight on the ways that various school systems around the country are able to strengthen the leadership qualities of their principals. Each book is studied by our administrators for several weeks after which they come together and compare notes with regard to what they were able to glean from the books and how they might be able to use what they ? learned from them at their schools. 'During these sessions, there is an exchange of ideas which along with what is obtained from the book content, serve to help the principals to develop their leadership qualities. Books like "No Excuses- Lessons from 21 High-Performing, High-Poverty Schools" stress the fact that children of all races and income levels can meet hi^h academic standards. The principals at these schools hold their teachers to the same high standards as they do their students. Further, principals work actively with parents to make the home a center of learning. As the title of the book would indicate, the principals of those 21 schools do not accept any excuses that might be given as a reason for poor academic achievement by their students because of race or the income level of their family. "The Ten-Minute Guide to Educational Leadership" suggests ten secrets of effective leadership things like goal setting, praising and reprimanding, assessment of structure and culture, assessment of leadership styles, and the assessment of the decision-making process. The author suggests that spending a minute a day on each of these secrets can result in a major contribution to the effective leadership of a principal. Other books include titles like "Walking the Talk Together". "Power Thinking", and ""Walk Awhile in My Shoes". All of them cover topics intended to help principals to deal with the various problems that they face as they strive for the organization which will help to make their schools more effective in improving educational achievement. The common thread which weaves its way through all the books and the discussion about them is effective leadership- a vital part of a successful school system. Our principals are enthusiastic about the workshop as they realize how it will help them to accomplish the academic progress we are constantly striving for. * Pembroke Housing Authority Youth Making the Grade The Youth Center Staff would like to congratulate several of our youth for academic improvement during the last nine-week reporting period.
