school was offHWY 72, approximately
2 miles traveling West from
Maynor's Center, Pembroke, N.C.
In the early 1970's the school was
moved to the Board of Education
of Lumberton, N.C. Rev.
Lawrence Maynor and his brother
Mr. Angus Archie Maynor are
cnown teachers of this one room
school house , which held 14 to
16 students.

Little Miss?Junior Miss Lumbee
Pageant to be held July 4th
Little Miss/Junior Miss Lumbee Pageants will be held
on July 4 at the Givens Performing Arts Center on the
campus of the University of North Carolina at Pembroke
beginning at 6:30 p.m. Eight beautiful little Lumbee girls
will vie for the title of Little Miss Lumbee and eleven for
the Junior Miss Lumbee title. Admission for the event is
$8.00 per person. Tickets are now on sale at the Perform
ing Arts Center Box Offices. Tickets may be purchased
from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. and one hour prior to each
performance. You may purchase tickets with VISA Master
Card or American Express.
This event is part ofLumbee Homecoming sponsored
by Lumbee Regional Development Association (LRDA).

Attorney Rodney Oxendine has
joined he taw firm of Locklear, Jacobs,
Hunt and Brooks. Mr.
Oxendine was previously employed
with the Robeson County District
Attorney's office. He is a graduate of
Pembroke State University and North
Carolina Central University School
of Law. Mr. Oxendine is married to
Janet Estes Oxendine and they have
two minor children: Logan age 12
and Luke age 10. Mr. Oxendine is
the son of the late Mr. and Mrs.
Simeon Oxendine of Pembroke.

Elections
On Saturday, June 9, the HaliwaSaponi
Indian tribe conducted its
annual elections. Elkton C. Richardson,
current Tribal Council Chair, won
the Vice Chair election by defeating
Warren County Commissioner Glen
A. Richardson. Ruth R. Ealing, incumbent,
retained her position on the
council. Harvey M. Green and Howard
Richardson became newcouncil members.

meeting on June 18th.

New book by Delano
Cummings to be available
during Lumbee Homecoming
Delano Cummings. author of Moon
Dash Warrior, will release his second
book on June 29,2001. The new book
is called River Dreams and is totally
different from his previous book.
Moon Dash Warrior deals with the
Native American perspective as a veteran
of the Vietnam War.
Is his new book. River Dreams,
"Cummingscombineshis Indian heritage,
his experiences as a Marine in
Vietnam and his dreams to weave
images of the past, the present and the
future into a thoughtful, spiritual and
exciting narrative of Native American
life and lore."
Cummings stated. "I interpret my
own dreams, take the role of a story
teller and talk about life on the Lumber
River."
Cummings will be in the Pembroke
Town Park with both his books for
sale on July 6 and 7th during Lumbee
Homecoming. River Dreams will sell
for S15.00 and Moon Dash Warrior,
now in its second printing, will sell for
S22.00.
