UQUOR CAUSE OF b DEATHS IN SIX MONTHS Drinking drivers were rfespon sible for 48 street and highway fatalities in North Carolina the first six months of this year, ac cording to a summary just com pleted by the Highway Safety Division. Ronald Hocutt, director of the division, said the accident re cords for the first half of 1940 show that 50 drunken or drink"- in/s: drivers were involved in 46 fatal accidents in which 48 per sons were killed. “The drinking driver is not the most numerous type of of fender on our highways,” com mented Hocutt, “but he certain ly is the most dangerous. The perso n who ha.s taken any alco holic beverages into his system, even one drink of liquor, is a hifthly potential menace to every other person using the highway OH which he drives. Alcohol .sometime stimulates those who drink it, causing them to become exhilarated and a little mwe recMcss than tjsual. Then ag-.Vn it s(imetiin«s has a depressing ef fect, and produces drowsiness. Still a^Tain, liquor often confuses and befuddles the mind and im pairs the vision. And it always affects the driver’s reaction time, hampering the coordination between mind and muscle that is so essential in safe driving.” I iSafety Director Hocutt S'trong- ly advises all individuals who do ehy drinking to get someone else do their drivin(g for them. “Drinking and driving Just don’t mix,” he declared.
