Opening week activities at
North Carolina College for
Negroes were concluded here
Sunday afternoon at 3:45
with an address by Governor
J. Melville Broughton. Speak
ing in the college’s Duke au
ditorium, the governor voiced
his faith in the coHege youth
of this generation to develop
an improved postwar world.
The governor was present
ed by President James E.
Shepard, who paid high trib
ute to the governor’s devotion
to the educational advance
ment of all citizens of North
Carolina.
Decrying the idea that post
war militarism will result
from the college’s interests in
present war training pro
grams, the governor stated his
beliefthat a better world is in
the making. “The-s lessons
leai’ned from this w’ar will be
sufficient to occupy the ablest
minds of our students and re
search technicians,” he said.
It was pointed out that the
high percentage of Army re
jectees due to pljysical disa
bilities will be a les.son of the*
first magnitude in postwar
public health.
