questions of “War and Peace,”
said that the world attempts to
arrive at peace by depending
upon force; but. the Christian
world says that righteousness
and justice are the important
things, and weigh more heavily
than bombs. “Wats,’’ he de
clared, “have been the cause of
the breaking down of civiliza
tion rather than the preservation
of it.” “The world is growing
close together,” he continued,
“and feelings differ nowhere in
the universe. We are all mem
bers of one great spiritual fami
ly, and there can be no peace

Cancer Society medal posthu
mously, for his research in can
cer which he conducted for 33
years at Harlem Hospital before
his death in October, 1952, He
is the first Negro to be given the
medal,
Mrs. Louis T. Wright, widow
of the physician, accepted the
award at a luncheon held at the
Hotel Astor Sunday afternoon to
launch the 1953 Cancer Crusade.
Also participating in the cere
monies were the two daughters
of the late physician: Dr. JaQ^
C. Wright and Dr, Barbara Penn
Wright, both engaged in cancer
research.,)
The medal, awarded for “most
outstanding contribution to can
cer control,” was presented to
Mrs, Wright by Dr, John C. A,
Gerster, one of the founders of
the New York City Cancer Com
mittee, who was lavish in his
praise of the late Harlem physi
cian.
In presenting the award Dr.
Gerster said that the New York
City Cancer Committee this
year unanimously voted the
award to “our greatly beloved,
late member. Dr, Louis T,
Wright,”
In citing some of the activities
of the cancer specialist, Dr, Ger
ster pointed out that “among
numerous distinctions, “he had
been chairman of the board of
directors of the National Asso
ciation for the Advancement of
Colored People, chairman of the
medical board and director of
the Cancer Research Foundation
of Harlem Hospital; and from
1948 to his death had been a
member of the New York Sur
gical Society.
