TPLY 25. 1953 Two youths from the John Avery Boy$ Club in Durham left the city last Friday for New York where they will attend a new boys camp,'Boy’s Harbor, at Lonn Island. The two Boys Club members are shoton above with John Avery Boys Club di rector, Lee W. Smith, who ac companied the pair on the trip to N.Y. On the left is Roosevelt Hairston, 14 year old son of ^tr. and Mrs. J. H. Hairston of 114 £. Piedmont Avenue and, right, Leroy Saunders, 13 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Saunder* of 807 ' Glenn Street. Saunders and Hairston were selected to attend the camp, sponsored by Anthony Drexel Duke, philan thropist, on the basis of their club attendance, activity partici pation, school attendance and general character. Both boys are active members of the club. Hairston, tenth gra der at the Hillside high school, is a ping pong champion at the club, and is catcher for the club baseball team. Saunders, an eighth grader at Whitted school, is a pool champion at the club, was manager for the basketball team last year and plays second base for the club baseball team. Their selection to attend the camp won for them an -expense- free trip and a month’s stay at the new camp, located in East Hampton on Long Island. One Hundred Seventeen Students From Four States Participate In N. C. College's Reading Clinic One hundred seventeen stu dents from four states were a- mong the participants in the Reading Clinic in the North Carolina College Summer Read ing Workshop that closed here Wednesday, July 15. North Carolina was represent ed with the largest number of workshop participants with 110 students. Enrollment by other states numbered: Virginia 1, South Carolina 4, and Georgia 2. Host To Vocational Agriculture Meet GREENSBORO One hundred twenty-five tea chers of agriculture, of North Carolina participated in the annual state conference held at A. and T. College July 13-16. In welcoming the group to the campus, Dr. F. D. Bluford, president of the college, remind ed the teachers that their re sponsibility was to guide the; rural youth in selecting a desir able occupation for which they are best suited. He gave; examples of the number of suc cessful farmers located all over the slate, and the improvement of leadership as a result of Vo cational agriculture.
