Dickson announces the marriage of his uughter, Florence Armetia, to Mr. Jefferson W. Foust of Durham and Greensboro. He is the son of Mrs. Bessie Barbee Foust and the late Mr. Foust. Mr. Foust is an A. and T. graduate and a contractor. Mrs. Foust is a graduate of Apex Beauty College, New York, N. Y. and a graduate Practical Nurse from Duke Hospital. She is now employed ^at Lincoln Hospital. They are residing at 509 Price Street. MISS HINNANT CELEBRATES BIRTHDAY Miss Elizabeth'“Cricket” Hinnant, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James A. Hinnant of 1123 Lynchburg Street, celebrates her 17th birthday on the 28th of August. A party will be giv en in her honor inviting Hillside students. THOMASES VISIT DURHAM Reverend and Mrs. J. H. Thomas and daughter, Carolyn were in the city recently visiting Mrs. Thomas’ father, Mr. A. B. Burch, who is ill. While here Rev. Thomas preached at Mount Vernon Church on August 9. He was glad to meet the {tastor and many friends. He left to return home in East Orange, New Jersey last Tuesday. SOWELLS IN CANADA Mrs. Merma Dunigan and Miss Teresa Sowell are visit ing JAr. and Mrs. Frank Sowell in Port Huron, Mich. They also plan to spend some time in Canada. ATTEND WINSTON-SALEM CONVENTION Misses Annie M. Dunigan and Lyda Vanhook attended the Woman’s Home and Foreign Mission Convention held in Winston-Salem, N. C. recently. They report an enjoyable trip. ST. JOSEPH CHURCH CLUB MEETING Mrs. Carrie Rigsbee was hostess to the Pastor’s Aid Club of St. Joseph A. M. E. Church at her home, 1215 Mason Street, Sunday afternoon at 4:30. The meeting was presided over by the president, Mrs. Annie L. Alston. After a brief busi ness session, remarks were made by visitors and members. Mrs. Rigsbee, assisted by friends, served refreshments to those present during the social hour. Those present were Mesdames Annie L. Alston, Laura Bailey, Laura Burnette, Willie May Burnett, Lucy Briggs, Florence Carter, Mary C. Evans, Nora Dunn, Allie Mitchell, Ella McLaughlin, Daisy Leak, Laura Strayhorne, Maranda Norman, Fannie Jones. Visitors present were Mesdames Maria Clark, Green, Myla Harris of Baltimore, Maryland. C. to attend the State Missionary Convention August 11-14. Mrs. A. M. Coward is a patient at Lincoln Hospital. Mrs. Dora Bracy of Lackawanna, New York is very ill at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. D. Ross, 1010 Rosedale Avenue. The tune- lul veterans, who sang for American Troops ' from Iwo Jima to Bad Nauheim, remain ed together as a unit under Captain Leonard De Paur's direction and are now making their sixth civilian concert tour of more tlian 160 concerts under the auspices of Colum bia Artists’ Management. Smith were Mesdames Rosa Holloway, Ethel Marshall, Parepa Watkins, Esther French, Emma Randolph, and Plas- sie Harris. GROUP VISITS NATURAL BRIDGE Mr. and Mrs. P. H. McNeil, Mr. and Mrs. Harrison Ter rain and Mrs. Rosa Branch spent last Sunday at Natural Bridge and Luray Caverns in Virginia. They report the scenery at both places was interesting and educational. MRS. WATKINS HOME AGAIN Mrs. Parepa Watkins is back in the city and reports a pleasant stay at Columbia University. C., OHIO Miss Ellen Wilson has returned to the city after a few days in Washington, D. C. visiting her sister, Mrs. Jessie Hooker. Mfister Thurman Little of 307 Gray Street spent four weeks in Washington, D. C. with his brother T. J. Little. He returned home over the week-end. The J. R. Lee’s have returned to the city from Columbus, Ohio after a visit with Mrs. Lee’s family members. Corporal, Mrs. Thurman Bridges Honored At Reception Recently DURHAM A reception honoring Corpo ral and Mrs. Thurman Oliver Bridges was held at the home of Mrs. Rosa Lee Capers, mother of the bride, at 604 North Main St. in Bamberg, S. C. on Saturday, August 15. Mcs.^ Bridges, who before her marriage was Miss Ear^ Lee Capers, is a graduate of the Richard Carroll Memorial high school and has completed nurse training at Columbia hospital of nursing. She is currently em ployed by the Duke hospital in Durham. Cpl. Bridges, son of Mr. Jolm Bridges, Sr., of Durham, was graduated from the Merrick Moore high school. He is now stationed at Fort Jackson, S. C. The house was decorated throughout with arrangements of palms and gladioli for the re ception. Mrs. C. A. Zeigler, Mrs. Devois and Miss Glenn Johnson of Bamberg served as hostesses. Presiding over the register was Miss Mary F. Harrison. Pimch and accompaniments were ser ved in the dinning room where the table was centered with the bridal cake and arrangements of can®es. Out-of-town guests included Mrs. Alice R. Bridges, mother of Cpl. Bridges, Mr. and Mrs. Horace Bridges and Mrs. J. W. Lee, of Durham, Mr. Ruffin Joyner, Miss Margaret Brown and Miss Mildred Fuller of Co lumbia, S. OQO Stowe Funeral services for Wood row Stowe of 514 Fairwood ave. were held Friday, Aug. 21. Mr. Stowe died in a local hospital. Rev. B. F. McKinzie officiated at funeral and graveside services which were at York Memorial park. Stowe is survived by his wife, Blrs. Virginia Stowe; two sons, Marshall and Larry; two daughters, Deborah and Darryl; and a grandfather, John Ross all of Charlotte. Vernon Bap tist Church here Sunday. According to a statement from Rev. E. T. Browne, pastor of the church, two special features will highlight the annual observance of this event. At the regular morning worship hour, a well known Baptist lay woman wiU be heard in a special message, and a musical program has been scheduled at 6:30 evening ser vice. Women are slated to assiune key roles in order of service at the church throughout the day in keeping with the observance. Mrs. A. L. The Junior manuel and guide of the Woman’s Baptist Home and Foreign Mission convention of North Carolina ■ will be studied and the group will hear inspirational messages from va rious missionary workers of the city and state each evening. Worship service and presenta tions will be made by members of the 26 groups of the church. Mrs. M. V. Morris serves as chairman of the retreat week.
