GROUP ATTENDS BURLINGTON SERVICE
Members of Annie Lee Tent Number 503 of Durham
were invited to attend services at Macedonia Church in Bur
lington, Sunday, September 6. Because of inclement weather
ohly a few of the members attended. The sermon was de
livered by Rev. Green of Durham. $25.00 was raised to help
on the church’s building fund.
MRS. ALEASE McKINNIE HOSTESS
TO MISSIONARY CIRCLE
On Monday, August 31 Mrs. Alease McKinnie entertain
ed members of the A. and B. Missionary Circle at her home
on Dunstan Street. After the devotional period, President
T.illian McKay presided over the business session. The
hostess served as secretary and read the minutes of the last
mieeting. A report was given by the treasurer Mable Powell. |
A thank you note and expressions came from the Nor
wood and Powell family in the passing of their husband and
father, Fletcher Norwood, Sr. who passed on July 31.1
After the business session the hostess, assisted by Mrs.
Elveta Monroe, served a delectable two course dinner.
Members present were Mesdames Hattie Geer, Martha
Armstrong, Lubertha Buie, Elveta Monroe, Lucille Starks,
Queen E. Toon, Lillian McKay and Mable Powell.
The group adjourned to meet with Mrs. Monroe on
Cornwallis Road.
Miss Nezzie Carteer has returned to the city after at
tending the YWCA Conference at Camp Sequoyah in Ashe
ville, North Carolina.
Mrs. Creasy Smith and grandsons, Major, Jr., James and
Micheal Geer, are back home after standing a two week’s
vacation in Baltimore, Maryland visiting relatives and
friends.
Reverend and Mrs. S. P. Cook and daughter, Rebecca
have returned to Durham and Kittrell after vacationing for
two weeks in various northern points visiting relativ^ and
friends.
Mrs. Alice Hill was hostess to the Friendly Workers Sick
Club at her home, 1209 Hanover Street, Saturday afternoon.
The meeting was presided over by the president, Mrs. Ella
M. Andrews. Members of the club paid $25.00 for sick dues.
After the business session a delicious dinner was served to
the following: Miss Margaret White, Mesdames Efiie Weav
er, Minnie Atwater, Ollie Price, Ella M. Andrews, Mary
Teasley, Betty Paylor, Dorothy Watson, Mary Spence, Patsy
Leacridt, Messrs. Avery Cross, Jack Filmore, Grover Fow
ler. The next meeting will be held at the home of Mrs. Ruth
Holloway on Ferrell Street.
Reverend E. T. Browne is attending the National Baptist
Convention in Miami, Florida.
OUT-OF-TOWNERS VISIT
Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Watson of Asheville recently spent
a few days with the W. W. Longs on Formosa Avenue. Mr.
Watson is the brother of Mrs. Long.
Mrs. Joseph Bynum, Sr. of New York arrived in the city
Thursday to accompany her children, Joseph, Jr. and Felecia
home after having spent a delightful summer with their
grandmother, Mrs. Maria Bynum and famliy on Glenn St.

York, were pleasant visitors in the city during the past week.
Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Williams of New York City have
returned home after a most delightful visit with the W. G.
Pearsons and son, Billy. The Williams were quite pleased
over the progress of their grandchild, Billy. Many social
courtesies were shown Mr. and Mrs. Williams during their
stay in Durham. ^
Me^ames Minnie P. Moses and Nell G. Wilson have re-

report a most enjoyable time. On their return home they
made brief stops in New York City and Philadelphia.
Messers Charlie Williams of New York and Gus Harris
of Newark, New Jersey motored down for Labor Day week
end. Mrs. Abraham made the return trip home with them
after a pleasant visit with her family members.
ENTERTAINS AT HOME
Mrs. Matilda Townsend entertained a few friends Tues
day evening at her home on Umstead Street honoring Mes-
dames The^oshia Ascue of New York City and Ara Abraham
of Newark, New J^fsey.
’ CLUB PICNIC
The Pearsontown Community Club held their annual
picnic Friday evening at the home of Mrs. Dora Green. Ap
proximately fifty members and guests enjoyed this gala
affair.
CHURCH SOCIETY MEETS
The Ladies Aid Club of Saint Joseph Church held its
first meeting for the Fall Wednesday evening with the Presi
dent, Mrs. Estella Nixon. Other officers are Vice-President,
Mrs. Carlotta Holmes; Secretary, Mrs. Lucille Hancock;
Treasurer, Mrs. Ruth Bolden.
Mr. and Mi^. Lewis Lee of Washington, D. C. motored
down to accompany their father, Jim Williams and nephews,
J. H. and L. B. Williams who spent «ome time with them.
Mrs. Katie Taylor has returned to Washington, D. C.
after vacationing her with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar
Tapp of Cornell Street. Mrs. Viola King also of Washing
ton, D. C. joined Mrs. Taylor here along with Mrs. Yoone
Raleigh of Greensboro, N. C. Many social courtesies were
shown them and they report having had a wonderful time.

PALS’ BIBLE CLASS
The Pals’ Class of the White Rock Baptist Sunday School
was entertained at the home of'Mrs. Susie Alston at 512
Price Street.
The hostess invited the class to the beautiful back lawn
These are the outstanding players on the Girls Softball
Team of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. The team has been
organized for two years and in its first year won a trophy.
This year, the team won second place in the pldy-off. The
team was in competition with the communities’ teams and
not church teams.

Mungo, who has shown a great deal of interest in the youth
of the chuYch and community, this team has done a wonder
ful job for youth. ,

BENNETT-McNEILL MARRIAGE ANNOUNCED
Mr. and Mrs. Solomon Bennett announce the marriage
of their daughter, Sarah Carolyn, to Sgt. Linwood McNeill of
Durham. Sgt. McNeill is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Mc

The spirit of disunity which is
found in almost every human en
deavor was deplored in a mess
age delivered at St. Paul Bap
tist’s regular Sunday morning
worship services by Rev. B. M.
McKenzie. ’This spirit of dis
unity, all too prevalent in our
churches, often defeats oppor
tunities for bringing together
people for gwd and restoring the
fellowship of mankind.
Rev. Lucas was heard in the
Sunday evening message follow
ing a program entitled the
“Twelve Tribes,” sponsored by
the Missionary department.
Music for the Sunday morning
services was furnished by the
Spiritual and Gospel choirs. Mrs.
Florence Harris, Mrs. Bertha

sentatives for the youth, women
and men groups of the church
urged cooperation for the com
munity’s forthcoming clean-up
campaign and the'church’s popu
larity contest scheduled for the
