Under the leadership of D. D. RaHikins, who was the church’s first Sun- : day School superintendent when it was organized in 1912, marked progress has been made up to the present time with the leadership responsibilities chan- (jing hands several times. The present superintendent is M. H. Torrence, who was elect ed in January of this year. For mer leaders of the school are: Mr. Rankins, W. M. Hogan, Mrs. Ida Rozell, Howard Gibson, and John A. Hogan. "The Confessions Of A Ham Singer" BY CHARLES JACOB HAKKI8 (Continued from U«t week) STUDENTS I concentrated on music in Boston, Mass, for 12 years. Dur- thii interval, I b*came acquain ted wWh many students then at tending the New England Con servatory W Music. There was Paul Whiteman, today’s famous maestro, Horace Whitehouse, Julius Chaloff, Guy Maier, Lee Pattison, former partners in a piano team; WesI^ Howard, Louia Jones, Andrew Rose- mond, James Hinton, and nu- __^merous others. These students , whetted my desire to make the most of my opportunity to learn music. Some of us could be found on the street far into the night dis cussing some phase of music. AN ASIDE ‘ There was a fellow among us in some of these discussions who oftea attacked me in de bate about telling that I was from the South. Apparently he thought to come from this section discredited a person. I took the opposite view, how ever, too many illustrous men have come from ‘Dixie’ to war rant such a narrow view by anyone. Then too, critics, in making comparisons had often said that students from the south show more warmth in their playing or singing than students from various other parts of the country. Also, men like Sidney Lanier, Joel Chaldler Harris, ' James Weldon Johnson, J. Rosamond Johnson, and William Grant Still never disowned the land of their nativity.
