Gilead°Baptist Church here on Saturday Feb. 12th united in marriage Miss Doris Marie Mitchell and Cla rence Freeman Williams, both of Durham. The double ring ceremony was performed by the Rev. Harold Roland, pastor of both the bride and groom. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Levi Mitchell of Durham, and Mr. Williams is the son of Mrs. Lillie Williams of Durham, and Mr. James Williams of Chicago, 111. A program of pre-nuptiai mu sic was presented by Charles Alston. Vocalist for the occasion was Miss Edna E^rl Cooper, friend of the bride, and the bridal chorus was rendered by the. Mt. Gilead Young People’s choir of which both the bride and groom are members. The bride, given in marriage by her father, wore a waltz length dress of Aylon tulle and chantiUy lace, designed with a fitted lace bodice with folds of tulle across the front, and full tulle skirt, over which was worn a lace redingote with Elizabethan collar and long fit ted sleeves ending in points over the wnste. Th« front of tba lace redingote was scallopped, showing a panel of the tulle skirt. Her fingertip veil of silk illusion was attached to a cap of matching lace and tulle. She carried a white prayer book topped with a purple orchid, showered with green fern tied with white ribbon. Miss Bernice Audrey Mit chell, sister of the bride, served as miud-of-honor, and Mrs. Ann Malone Lunsford, friend of the, bride and her family, served as matron of honor. They , wore dresses of gold antique silk, fashioned in princess style, with V necklines and three quarter length sleeves set with rhime stone buttons. They wore matching bandeaux and carried hand bouquets of white gladioli and red carnations, tiered with red and white satin ribbons. The bridesmaids, who wore dresses of rose fashioned to match the maid and matron of honor were: Misses Geraldine Vivian Barbee, Zelma Josephine Holloway, Barbara Jean Ad ams, and Kitty Willet Sneed. Roosevelt Weeks, Jr., friend and comrade of the groom was beet man. Ushers were: Stephen >Uexander McLeod, Henry Clay King, Willard Perry and Ronald Jones. Little Gaynelle.^ Samuels was flower girl and Master Floyd Linder was ringbearer. » For her daughter's wedding Mrs. Mitchell wore a full length dress of navy chiffon and lace, with matching hat and shoes, white gloves. Her corsage ''of t>ink rose buds was a gift from the groom. The bride groom's mother selected a gown of peach chiffon and lace with t matching shoes and white floves. Immediately following the ceremony the bride’s parents entertained at a reception at the church parish house. Miss Joyce Home presided over the punch bowl with Misses Hilda Harris and Hortense Boone as sisting. Mesdames Ida Olive, Willet Sneed, Stella Alston and Carolyn Cates were in charge of the entire reception. Mes dames Hattie Suitt, Wilhelminia Upchurch and Jennie Shaw pre sided over the gifts. Later in the evening the couple left for a wedding trip. For the trip the bride was dress ed in cocoa brown knitted suit with persuasion neck and'col lar. Her topper was beige, with matching accessories. Her or chid lifted from her prayer book became her corsage for her travel outfit. The bride was graduated from the Hillside High School and at present a sophomore at North Carolina College. The groom also completed his high school education at Hillside and was a sophomore at North Caro lina College prior to his induc tion in the armed forces. Parents Of The Beckwith School In Meeting CHARLO’TTE A large number of enthusias tic Parents of the Beckwith School of Music attended their second monthly meeting this year. They made further plans for the coming Birthday Party, held on March 7, to honor the school’s founding 10 years ago. The party was held at the McCrorey’ Y.M.C.A. Invitations were ^nt to all the present and former students of the school and their families. Free tickets were given or mailed from the school office. Those from the school office. An in teresting program of activities was planned for all ages. Many parents donated birthday cakes for the gala celebration. Roy Farley was elected Presi dent for the year 1955-56. Mrs. Lucille Ray was commended on her excellency as president. She will continue serving through cornmencement time in June. Additional committee members were named as follows: Mes dames Ben Howie, Margaret Farley, Elizabeth Culp, Olga Henderson, Mamie Robinson, Eunice Howey, Inez McCauley, Blondina Foust, Mable Dykes, Vaness Crowder, Frances Oates, Hattie Poe, and messrs. Ulysses Phifer and Roy Farley. The 10th Anniversary Ball will be held at the YMCA by the Alumni Association imme diately after the birthday party. Cosmetology Club Donates To Polio Fund Monday afternoon, February 21, the Cosmetology Club, Chapter 9, met at the home of Mrs. Thelma Hill on Fayette ville Street. The president, Mrs. Fidelia Brooks, presided. A very inspiring report was given by Mrs. Mozelle Mitchell, chair man of the Club’s ptogram com mittee, at which time a dona tion in the amount of $37.00 was turned over to the presi dent to be given to the Polio Fund. After other brief business reports were made, a social period was declared and several members received lovely gifts from their secret pals. A delicious menu was served to the fc^owing members: Mes dames, Rosa Brown, Callie Ashford, Mearline Johnson, Ju lia Perry, Peccola Jones, Willie Watkins, Mortez Bates, Hattie Geer, Mabel Barnette, Fidelia Brooks, Zelma Adam, Josephine Perry, Mozzel Mitchell, Earlie Grandy, Bonnie Reid, Elmira Flintall, Classie Brown, Mag nolia Leake, Thelma Hill, MIsst es Rosa Henderson, Victoria Moore, and Hazel McCoy. News Fr(m The Year 'Round Garden Club Mrs. Bennett Entertains Club The Year Round Garden Club met on Monday, February 21, with Mrs. Alma Bennett, at her home on Masondale Ave. The garden gate was opened by Gardener Gertrude XiOng. . Gardeners were quite de lighted with the" delivery 61 a camera projector and scre^, their project of the year. Im mediately, the apparatus was used to make a picture of the happy group. A record Library wiU be es tablished, whereby accurate progress on garden activities can be recorded. Gardner Ben nett's husband entertained with a most informative movie, on roses, from the Jackson Perkins Company. Mrs. Sybil Taylor was Mrs. Bennett’s guest. Brown Delivers ’The “Kingdom Seekers Bible Class” of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church observed its 16th Anni versary at the church on Pine Street, Febmary 27th at 3:30 p.m. Pastor E. T. Browne gave the devotional message and Deacon T. L. Rowland led in prayer. History of the class was given by Miss Lyda Vanhook. Pastor E. T. Browne presented the guest speaker, the Rev. J. A. Brown, pastor of the Ebenezer Baptist Church who delivered the very inspiring anniversary message—“Seeking God First.” Music for the occasion was fur nished by the Male Chorus of the Ebenezer Baptist Church. Mrs. Flonnie Goodloe Hostess To Dorcas Club Mrs. Flonnie Goodloe was the charming hostess to the Dorcas Club Thursday evening, Mar. 3. Devotionals were led by President Lyda V. Merrick. Mrs. Gazelle Lipscomb presided at the piano, and Mrs. Effle Cot ton-the Club’s • “Songbird” led the songs. ’The Secretary, who’d been absent for two months, re ceived a heart wanning “Wel come” back again. After the im portant business was transacted Mrs. Charles Amey was wel comed as “guest speaker.” Mrs. Amey’s subject was “Be Boss of Your Job.” Hers was an excel lent talk stressing ones future- (1) Financial (2) Use of Physi cal Strength (3) Making good use of one’s talents. (4) Gaining Inspiratlon-Using Sundays Ap propriately (5) Developing Skills and Strengthening Ones Memory. She emphasized not serving for applause-in fact'the talk was really worth every one’s consideration and every one thanked Mrs. Amey for the help she brought. Mrs. Goodloe was kindly as sisted by her “Glenn Street” sisters and everyone was happy to be present and enjoyed her very delectable menu. Her many friends in the Church Dorcas Club, are wel coming Miss Constance S. Young “home again” after over* two months stay in NYC with her dear friends, the Alston Beardens. Beautiful arrangements of spring 'flowers weUe seen throughout her very attractive home. A very inspiring devo tion was given by Mrs. Nettie Johnson, whose theme was— “Love and Charity,” which is a good motto for the club. Very fine reports were given by the Sunshine Committee. Mrs. Mabel Mabry, the presi dent, presided and presented the guest speaker, Mrs. Omega Livingstone, who spoke on h^ recent voyage. She took the group on an imaginary trip abroad to Portugal, Rome, Italy, ' Rock o^ Gibraltor, France, Algeria, Casablanca and Spain. Not only was Mrs. Livingston a fluent speaker-her memory was superb. She really had this group of thirty ladies sailing right along with her and enjoying every minute... The hostess served a pala table salad course and desert. Guests present were; Mes dames, Omega Livingston, Lau ra Bruce, Madge Turner, Annie Strickland, Mary Raye, Sara Felder, Stella Alston, Lillian Buchanan. Members present were: Mes dames, Elnora Smih, Marion Alston, P. Grace Williams, Plassie Harris, Minnie Forte, Matilda Townsend, Hattie Mea dows, Lena Richardson, Gladys McNeal, Sallie Harris, Essie Curry, Vivian Stowe, Rosa Far rington, Nettie Johnson, Lucille J. Hancock, Wilma Milum, Mattie Alston, Laura Burnette, Bessie Pratt, Mable Powell, Bert Davis. of all races. She spent three summer terms there while studying at “Union Theo Sem.” and “Columbia University.” Miss C. Russell Entertains Azalea Club Miss Cleo Russell was hostess to the Azalea Garden Club on last Monday night. Her lovely home • was decorated with beautiful cut flowers. The president, Mrs. Effie Cot ton presided. After a profitable business session a social hour was held. Mrs. Cora Russell, mother of Miss Russell, the bo$T tess, gave encouraging remarks and graclousljr- welcomed the club Into her home. Mrs. Cotton then expressed thanks tor the “surprise” given her -by her club members at the last meet ing. Two new members were re ceived and welcomed—^Mrs. Minnie Wilson and Mrs, Cor nelia Johnson. Miss Russell had as her guest Mrs. Georgie Jami son. Mrs. Lucas then showed pic tures of recent happenings in the club. These were very in teresting. The hostess served a delicious menu.
