To Visit local hstitutions Citizens of Durham, City and County, joined others of this atate and nation in celebrating National 4-H Club Week. The National Theme was “Improv ing Family and Community Living.” Some of the purposes and ob jectives of this nationwide ob servance were as follows: To encourage 4-H Club mem bers to take inventory of them selves and their project work and set higher goals of achieve ment for 195&. To inform the general public ■s to the objectives and activi ties in 4-H Club work. To give 4-H Club members an opportunity to develop a working knowledge of their 1955 theme, “Improving Family . and Community Living.” To acquaint parents in every community with what 4-H members are already doing. ■TO give recognition to the far- reaching results for 4-H Club work from the standpoint of the nation, state, county and local conununity, through the press, magazines, radio, and television. On Tuesday March 1, a Lea ders’ meeting was held to dis cuss and formulate further plans for the occasion. Miss Maxine Young and Mr. Raphael Cuthbertson, who visi ted Europe with other delegates from various sections of the United States under the spon- aorship of the International Farm Youth Exchange I.F.Y.E., were here to visit all of the ■chools and other institutions. The following schedule was observed Tuesday March 8. 11; 00 a.m. Little River School; 2:00-3:00 p.m. Pearsontown Sichools No. 1 and 2; 7:45 p.m. Stanford L. Warren Public Li brary. Wednesday March 9: Durham Business and Professional Chain Directors meeting and Luncheon of 12:30 p.m. Mer- rick-Moore School 4-H Assem bly at 2: p.m., WDTV for a Tele cast at 3:45 p.m. At many of the meetings slides of various events, activi ties and scenes were shown The Merrick-Moore School 4-H Council conducted again this year a Project Workshop on March 9 for all club members, leaders and parents. Harrison Library RALEIGH Mothers of the Raleigh Chap ter of the Jack and Jill of America Inc. club met Monday night, February 28, at the Rich ard B. Harrison Library. Each club member brought clothing to be sent to needy children of Haiti, which is a project of the organization all over the country. A final report of receipts and disbursements for the Polio Fund drive was made by Mrs Susie V. Perry, chairman of this event, which indicated gross collections of almost $500.00. Plans were announced for March activities of entertain ment for Jack and Jill children as follows: Four to seven year old group, March 12, an event titled “Nina and Hans Dance in Hollan4,” at the Tuttle Com munity Center, March 26, a kite party (place pending), super vised by Mrs. Harveleigh White. Scheduled for the 8-11 age group, on March 13, a trip to the Morehead Planetarium at Chapel Hill, directed by Mrs. Ethel Lytle, and on March 19, a party to include a game hour, at the home of Mrs. Susie V. Per ry, who is also chairman of this activity. Twenty of the children are pupils of a weekly dance in struction class, which is offered by the club, «nd"^ught by Mrs. -Ruth Boulware at the Tuttle Community Center. Home Economics Day Set For Friday, March 18 North Carolina College will observe its sixth annual Home Economics Day here on Friday, March 18. Three scholarships worth nearly $300 will be awarded some lucky high school girls at the meet. The new Home Economics Building will be the scene of day long activities high lighted by the traditional Home.„£cono- mics compettitive test, during the morning of the« meeting. First prize is $130 scholarship award, second prize is cash award of $100, and third prize is $50 toward tuition and fees at NCC. The afternoon part of the program will feature demon strations, movies, slides, and exhibits. As a part of the social activi ties of the day, the Home Econo mics staff and the Home Econo mics club will award souvenirs, serve refreshments, and enter tain at an informal affair. Miss Mayme McIntosh is serving as chairman of the pro gram which is expected to at tract some 500 high school girls from the Carolinas and Vir ginia.
