A Group Of National Alumni Association Memlwrs The Ebcecutive Committee of the North Carolina Region of the National Alumni Associa tion met in Durham recently to plan the annual state meeting and to boost the financial cam paign of the association. The date and site of the annual meeting were tentatively set for April 23 and 24 at Franklinton Center (formerly Brick Rural Life School) Bricks, N. C. Above are persons 'who at tended the meeting. UNDERWOOD Leadership Training In Scouting Girl Scout Week, March 6-13 was observed in a number of ac tivities planned and carried out by local scouts, brownies and their leaders. Special events in which they joined in observing the 43rd Anniversary of the Organization were a cookie sale, window exhibits and live displays, a mother-daughter banquet and a leadership train ing course. The class in leadership train ing was taught by Mrs. Ella Allen of Lincoln School. Old leaders as well as new were di rected in the review of princi ples and past activities and the making of plans for the future. Among those participating in the study were Mrs. Louise Vin cent, Mrs. Hazel Williams, Mrs. Lillian S. Pittman, Mrs. Lillian Ivey, Mrs. Annie D. Armstrong, Mrs. Juanita Burnette, Mrs. Catherme Johnson, and Mis&es Pettie Brown and O. Leaphart. Church News The Reverend W. D. Burgess, a former pastor of Mount Pisgah, delivered the morning message at that church Sunday, March 6. Homecoming will be obser ved by the Junior Department of the City Missionary Union, Sunday March 13 at 3:30 P.M. The program over which Miss Jane McNeil of St. James Church presiding will consist of an address by Miss Ada Ruth Brown, Junior Field Worker for Woman’s Baptist H. and F. Mis sion Convention, who will be introduced by Miss Agnes Al ston, Vice President of the Con vention’s Jr. Department. Miss Alston wiU be presented by our own Jacquelin Long, Assistant Corresponding Secretary of the same organization. Our imme diate objective, say Madames Pittman and Underwood, super visors, is to collect our pledges on jour foreign scholarship. The Jtmiors from various churches will also' be trying to meet cer tain standards in organization and missionary achievement. Southeastern N. C.* Drama Fes tival The Southeastern District of N. C. Drama Association held its annual festival at Booker T. High School, Wednesday, Mar. 9. Eight schools had entries in the contest, which began in the early afternoon and lasted through the evening. The two schools producing the winning plays were Dillard High of Goldsboro and Williston Senior High of Wilmington. Golds boro’s play was Special Guests directed by Mrs. Josie Boney Carr and WiUiston’s play was “Two Crooks and a Girl” direc ted by Mrs. C. H. Robinson. These two plays were rated “A- 1” and will complete for state awards in the finals to be held at Shaw University in Raleigh. Mrs. Drew is a native of Rocky Mount. Miss Ernestine Hill, Senior at Elizabeth City State Teach ers College, returned to school after spending the week-end with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Hill. Mrs. Nellie Barnes who was a patient at Quigless Clinic in Tarboro for the past two weeks is convalescing at home after a major operation. Dr. P. W. Burnette, veteran physician of this community, is now a patient at Memorial Hos pital of Chapel Hill. His wife is at his bedside. The Jolly Hour Club met with Mrs. Amy Whitfield at her residence on West Thomas St. Tuesday at 8:00 P. M. After a brief business session, Mrs. Whitfield se^ed salad and ice courses to the following mem bers: Madames Minnie Allen, Geneva Lewis, Lillian Battle, Ardelia Holman, Mary E. Bul lock, Georgia Summer, Harriet Terry, Idelia Bellamy, Lucy Gray, Mable Battle, Katie Ro binson and Lizzie Powell. Obituaries Funeral services for Mr James K, Taylor, 84, who died at his home, 800 S. Grace St. Sunday February 27 were held from Mount Zion Baptist Chut' ch 2:30 P.M. March 3. The pas tor, Dr. R. W. Underwood de livered the eulogy. Surviving are his son, Mr. James K. Tay lor, Jr., three grand children. Corporal James K. Ill, Hazel C. and William Leon of the home; three sisters, Mrs. Cora Flowers of Richmond, Va., Mrs. Mary Williams of New York City and Miss Kate Taylor of the home; two brothers, Mr. Willie Tay lor of Essex and Mr. Ossie Tay lor of Petersburg, Va. Inter ment was in Utility Cemetery.' Hunter and Sorrel, morticians. The funeral of Mr. James Alston, who died at McGuire Veteran’s Hospital Sunday, March 6 at 9:55 A.M. was held at Moimt Zion Church Wednes day at 4: P.M. The eulogy was delivered by the Reverend C. B. Battle, pastor of Union Baptist Church, Richmond, Va. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Doro thy Bowden Alston, three child ren, Barbara, Reginald and Re gina and his mother, Mrs. Zana Alston.
