They also visited with Mrs. Merrick's friend, Mrs. Ellis, on Ash St They report a very nice trip. Johnnie Mays of Pickett St., is a patient at Lincoln Hospital. Miss Futh G. Rush of Spel- m«n College, Atlanta, Georgia spent a lew days in Durham last week visiting friends. During her stay she was the house guest of Miss Marjorie Shepard on Fayetteville Street. Miss Rush was enrout* to Winston-Salem to attend the Mother-Daughter Banquet at the Y.W.C.A. for which she was the guest speaker. Mrs. Annie Day Smith of New Bern spent the week end in the city visiting her sister, Miss Marjorie Shepard, and other relatives and friends. Among the Durhamites at tending the mass meeting of the NAACP which was held in the Memorial Auditorium on Sun day, May 8, in Raleigh were Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Logan, Sr., Mr. and Mrs. Edd Merrick, Mr. and Mrs. James W. Davis, Attorney M. Hugh Thompson, J. H. Wheeler, J. S. Stewart, Maceo SlQan and Rev. H. A. Smith. Dr. and Mrs. D. B. Cook and sons, David and Logan, and ne phew, Gmrge Logan III, spent last Sunday in Weldon visiting Dr. Cook’s parents. Dr. and Mrs. D. B. Cook, Sr. 1006 Whitted Street. Mrs. Jessie Moore, the presi dent, led the devotions. The les son was taught. by Mrs. Mabel Strudwick. Refreshments were served by the hostess. Members present were Mesdames Carrie Riggs- bee, Jessie McAdam, Mary Campbell, Daisy Leake, Lillie McDade, Alma Hughes, Tru- mella Smith, Mary Robbins, Eva Southerland and Miss Christine McAdam. Honors Mothers With Program For twenty-five years, Mrs Mary C. Evans of Umstead Street has been a sponsor for a special program on Mother’s Day; and this year proved to be no exception as such a pro gram was presented May 8th at 6:45 at St. Joseph AME Church Mrs. Josephine S. Strayhorn was Mistress of Ceremonies The devotional message and prayer were given by the ,Pas tor, Rev. D. A: Johnston. Mrs. Cynthia Pearson Smith brought words of welcome. A reading was given by Mrs. Marion S. Henry. Norma Alice Bennett did a recitation. The guest speaker, Mrs. Sybil Taylor, was presented by Mrs. Strayhorn The following musical num bers were rendered: Solo Mrs. Katie L. Smith; Duett, Mrs. Rosetta Southerland and Mrs. Ametta Bames. The Crown Bearer was Deborah Watts. Mrs. D. A. Johnston was crown ed mother of the year. Mrs. Evans gave a reading-"In the Land of Don’t You Worry.” Ushers were Misses Evelyn Pugh, Lillian Biu'ton, Ruby Til ley and Ruth Tilley. Mrs. Annie K. Daye of Mc- Dougald Terrace and Mrs. Wil' lie Bradshaw of 4th Street spent the weekend in Danville, Virginia visiting Mrs. Daye’s brother, Davii. Kenion, and his family. Mrs. Mayla T. Harris of Bal timore, Maryland has returned home after spending a few days in the city on business. Pearsontown Community Club The Pearsontown Community Club had its closing meeting Monday night. May 2, with Mrs. Gertrude Faison at her home on Cecil Street. In the absence of the president, the meeting was presided over by Mrs. Geneva Cheek, who also presented the guest speaker, Dean J. T. Taylor of N. C. Col lege, who made a talk on “The Work of a Community Club." During the social hour, the hos tess, Mrs. Faison, served a par ty plate to the guests and all club members present. Woman’s Auxiliary of St Titus The Woman’s Auxiliary of St. Titus Episcopal Church held its final meeting Wednesday night. Miss Bettie Foster was hostess. The president, Mrs. Pearl Cordice, presided over the business session. Mrs. L. T. Walker read the minutes. Prayers for the Woman’s Aux iliary, prayer for Missions, for guidance of the Holy Spirit, prayer for Christian Social Relations were repeated by ^ all. TIrs."E. C. Turner reported on the annual meeting held in Chapel Hill last month in the Chapel of the Cross Church. The fall meeting will open with Mrs. Louise T. Williams on Pekoe Street in September. A full course dinner was served by the hostess. Other members present were Mesdames J. S. Thomson, E. N. Toole, Percy Young, Julia Harris, W. S. Tay lor, I. G. Newton, W. H. Mc Laughlin, L. T. Williams, Misses Connie Young and Feli cia Miller. The Moxahalia Class of St. Joseph AME Church met Tues day night. May 10th, at the home of Mrs. Annie McDade, Stewardess Board No. Ill The Stewardess Board No III of St. Marks Church met at the home of Mrs. Carrie Williams on Homeland Avenue. The president, Mrs. Minnie Alston, presided. After a very interesting business session, an ice course was served by the hostesi). Members present were Mesdames Kitola Curtis, Ella Hayes, Annie Young, Louise Sears, Ann Mitchell, Cornelia Herndon, Helen McNeil, Pearl Speai^man, Cora Davis, Mattie Fulton, Docia Skinnef, Marie Penny, Esther ^ayes, Mattie Beckham, Ethel Williams and Miss Mary Gregory. The Durham Alumnae Chap ter of Barber Scotia College met at cottage No. 3, N. C- C. Wednesday, May 11, at eight o’clock. Miss Diana Dent, Mrs. R. Ramey and Mrs. C. E. Boul- ware were the hostesses. Mem bers present were Mesdames W. J. Kennedy, E. R. Merrick, H. P. Amey, C. E. Boulware, M. Shearin, T. D. Parham, E. Hill, Misses Cleo Russell, Diana Dent, and Helen Clement. Some of the members of the Chapter will attend the Com mencement exercises,^ May 29 and 30. All are sending finan cial support for the proposed dining room-kitchen unit. Mrs. Marion Cordice Parham who recently ended an extended stay in Japan was the guest speaker of the evening and the picture she showed and the talk she gave were well re ceived. Refreshments were ser ved and the chapter members reluctantly adjourned not to meet again until the Fall when meetings will be resumed.' Miss Helen Clement is Presi dent of the local chapter. Miss Cleo Russell, Treasurer and Mrs. Ethel Hill, Secretary. Members unable to be pre sent were: Mesdames B.A.J. Whitted, R. N. Harris and Miss Felicia Miller. Miss Elizabeth “Cricket” Hinnant, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James R. Hinnant of 1123 Lynchburg Street, is back from College. She is visiting her family a few weeks, before go ing to New York. Miss Hinnant is a sophomore at Philander Smith College in Little Rock Arkansas. Mrs. Minnie Moses Hostess On Wednesday evening. May 11, the C.I.C. Club of St. Jo seph AME^■ Church met at the home of Mrs. Minnie Moses, 1804 Fayetteville Street. After The Floral Club of Ebenezer Baptist Church held its regular monthly meeting Sunday, May 15, at 4 p.m. at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ulester Adams at 2205 Fayetteville Street. Mem bers attending were Mrs. Zelma Adams, hostess; Mesdames M:^t- tie Holloway, Martha Stanley, Iceleen Josey, Della Hubbard, Addie Smith, Helen Battle, Ad dle Barbee, Annie Belle Car- rick, Maude Thorpe, Carrie Mc- Caskill, Effie Chavis, Mattie Brown, and Mildred Mangum. Pretty Gloria Walker, 19, Pensacola, is the "wow girl" of the month of Florido A and M University student newspaper. The Famcean. The popular co ed is a senior nursing student. In case some of you fellows are interested, her hobbies are- swimming, dancing, skating, sewing, and reoding. Miss Wol- ker is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. A and M staff photo by H. Jortes, Jr. Mrs. Helen Lash was honored as a May birthday guest. She was also presented a gift from the club members. After the meeting Ulster Adams assisted Mrs. Adams in serving a delicious repast. East End and East Durham The Adult Education Club of East End and East Durham en joyed a wonderful evening of discussion and tea at the W. D. Hill Recreation Center Sunday, May 15, at 4:00 p.m. The Theme of the discussion was What Can I Do To Help Make My Children Better Citi zens? The sub-topics under consideration were: (1) How Can I Make Better Use Of My Education In Rearing My Child ren. (2) What Portion Of My Time Should I Give To My Children. (3) How Can I Get A Better Understanding Of My Children and (4) How Can A Broken Home Effect My Child ren. Listening in on the discus sion were many business and professional persons of the city. Some of the friends sharing in the discussion were: Dr. B. Carolina College; Miss D. S. Dent, Home Economics Instruc tor, and L. R. Holmes, Direc tor of the W. D. Hill Community Center. Members of the Adult Education group of NCC also took a part in the discussion. A silver offering was taken to help send children to Hillside Day Camp. special recognition of A and B students on the honor roU. Among those receiving this honor was Miss Dorotliy Stan field of Detroit, formerly of Durham. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Stanfield, now living in Detroit. Those from here attending the affair were Misses Ethel Stanfield and Marjorie Norris, Mrs. Alice Williams and Mrs. E. S. Norris. Mrs. Norris' son, James T. Norris, Jr., is a member of the A. and T. faculty. Church Club Meets On Sunday, May 15th, The Family Circle Club of St. Mark AME Zion Church met with BSr. and Mrs. Ervin Jones, 2314 Ellington Street. The devotions were led by the president, Mrs. Odessa Alexander. Members present were: Mesdames Louise Frazier, Annie Thompson, Sara Cameron, Helen McNeil, Lottie Lyon Park Rose Garden Club _ _ - « . iiiBf KpfnrA th» On Monday evening, April 9, Mrs. Elnora Smith was hos tess to the Lyon’s Park Rose Garden Club at 'her home on Nelson Street. The house was beautifully decorated with cut flowers. The garden gate was opened by the president. Gar dener Alice Jones. The club song “God Loves the Little Roses” was led by Gardener Elizabeth Bullock. Bible quota tions were said by all and pray er was offered by Gardener Jones. With the last verse of the club song, the president opened the meeting for business. Minutes of the previous mat ing were read and adopted. Committee reports were made. Sunshine Chairman, Gardener Pearl Brown, reported that Gar dener Elizabeth Hester 'had been a patient at Duke Hospi tal. She is now home and doin£ well. We hope for her a speedy Cochran, Carrie Grant, Odessa Alexander, DoUie Johnson, Mil dred Jones and Grover Burthey. The meeting was very in spiring. After the business ses sion, the hostess served a deli cious two course dinner. Mrs. Jones was assisted in serving by Mrs. Janie White and Mrs. Lillie Parker. Mr. Burthey thanked the hos tess for such fine hospitality. The next meeting will be Sun day, June 19. Mrs. Sara Came ron is the reporter for the club. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Cozcirt and Otis Cozart of Baltimore, Md. were weekend guests of their mother, Mrs. Mary Cozart of Kent Street. They came to be with her on Mother’s Day. Other visitors were Mrs. Louise Moore of Baltimore, Md., Mrs. Pat Himter of New York City, and Mrs. Frances Crews and family of Raleigh. The gdrdeners thanked the committee for their work. After the business session, the president turned the meet ing over to the hostess and Pro ject Chairman, Gardener El nora Smith. A game was played called ‘‘Guess the Name of the Flowers." Gardener Alice Jones scored the highest number of points and won the prize, a beautiful plant. Following this. Gardener M. W. Webb, our Touring Chair man, along with the Project Chairman, showed pictures of gardens of members made on their tour in April, on our own projector and screen. The pictures were taken by Mrs. Elnora Joyner, while Gar dener Smith operated the pro jector. Pleased by the exhibit of their gardens on the screen, the members tendered a vote of thanks to the Project and Tour ing Committees. A delicious repast was served just before the meeting was ad journed. The following club fully decoraied 'Vith a center piece of red and white gladlolas, fern and white candles. The menu was served buffet style. Gardener Sophorlna Green thanked the hostess on behalf of the members for the fine recep tion given them. The president dismissed the group as they ad journed. The following club members were present: Gar deners Mary Hardy, Mabel Freeland, Helen McDade Mc Clain, M. W. Webb, Notle Cur ry, 'Victoria Joyner, Daisy Green, Alene Mabene, Elizabeth Bullock, Fannie Tapp, Mattie R. Guest present were: Mes dames Beatrice Manley, Willie Malone, Elyvene Thorp, Alease Horrald, Misses Thelma Powell and Mary L. Stephens. The next meeting will be held at the home of Mrs. Flon- nie Smith on Alston Avenue. A Martha Washington Favorite Though ferries ar« linked with George 'Washington, his wife's feeipe file did not include one for a cheny dessert. Nevertheless, one cooking historian of that era claims a cherry bread pudding was a favorite of Martha Washington’s. So to honor this famous First Lady, Arnold Becipe Service has developed a recipe for our modem palates. SPICY CHERRY PUDDING 1 can (2 cupi) tart red cherrie* 2 eggs, well beaten 2 teaspoons lemoif Juice K teaspoon nutmeg 2 teaspoons cornstarch cup water Heat oven to 876* P. (moder ate), Drain juice from cherries and place in small sauce pan with lemon juice and nutmeg. Mix corn starch and 'Water together t^til smooth; stir into juice and cook until thickened. Combine with cherries and place in greased one- % cup sugar U cup (H stick) butter or mar garine, melted 2 cups (4 slices) finely diced Bnck Oven TYhite Bread ^art baking dish. Beat eggs, sugar and butter together; add bread cubes and mix well. Pour bread mixture over cherries. Bake, uncovered, for 35 to 40 minutes, or until nicely browned. Serve hot or cold with cream.
