Total $013.80 Capitol Close-Up (Continued from Page Two) Mission to Liberia, Is sure to be the next Ambassador to the West African republic. State Department sources predict an early appointment — possibly within six weeks—to fill the post left vacant by the death of Ambassador Jesse D. Locker, at Monrovia, on April 10. Others, on the policy-making level, point out that the only quick means of filling the vacancy would be the appointment of someone alr«|^y (Cleared and on location, and further that FOA, in which Jones now works, will become a part of the State De partment, and so responsible to the Ambassador, in a matter of weeks. An Ambassador who has already learned the foreign aide ropes could be a distinct asset. Also Jones is already “accept able’’ to the LibeHan Govern ment. Won’t need to do much but hold up his right hand. The Corcoran Art Gallery We were very pleased to see on the front page of the Norfolk Journal and Guide, last week. a letter from Corcoran Gallery Director Herman W. Williams, Jr., asking fir a “correction of two erroneous statements’\ in this column for the week end ing March 12. The item m question was headed, “The Long Arm of the Dead,” and was as follows: “Capital culture suffers serious ly from ‘the long arm of the dead.’ While the work of Negro artists is occasionally accepted for hanging at Cochoran Gal lery exhibits, Negro students are, by charter, excluded from the Corcoran's Art School, and the Gallery, contrary to custom, buys no work of Negro artists, howeysr meritoriotis, for. its permanent collection.” Period. We called Mr. Williams, (whom we had called before about the same matter.) He made a partial statement which will be part of “The Story of the Corcoran Gallery” which we shall write as soon as (1) Mr. Williams finds time to talk with us, (2) We talked with the president or me Corcoran’s trustee board, who is now out of the country (back in about three weeks) and (3) we per sonally .checkel the Corcoran charter. Anyway, we promise our readers a story of great interest- come June. A “correction’’ has been called for. We aim to do what is to be done, in a big way!
