He took trip to town one day. an all day trek, and In the back ol the wagon he had several ears of com to feed the mules their noonday meal. Road was crooked, however, that the mules had eaten the com be fore they reached iown. A se vere storm clime up and the fellow decided to head for home before the storm hit. He whipped up the mules and j took off cross country. It was a close race. When they reach ed home the mules were dry; the farmer got soaking wet The wagon was full of rtdn, hail, and fish sucked up from a lake by a tornado. ’The dog had to swim all the way home. The farmer tied up the mules to an oak tree where about two dozen ears of t>op- com were hung up to dry. The weather turned hot. It got so hot that the popcorn popi>ed. Thinking it was snow, the mules lay down and froze to death. CLUB Amos Thornton, ail-Amerl- can halfback on North Caro lina College’s 1953 and 19S4 CIAA championship football teams, was married in Nor folk, Va. earlier this month to jlSUss Sallie Mae Hughes, for mer sweetheart of the Univer sity of Illinois’ famed J. C. Caroline. Miss Hughes, a 1955 gradu ate in commerce of NCC, gained national prominence in 1952 when she was photo graphed by national magazines at Illinois where she was Caroline’s guest at Homecom ing celebrations. Again, ta 1953, Miss Hughes made the news when Caroline came to Durham and spent the better part of a spring vacation on the campus at North. Carolina College in Diurham. She, Caro line, Thornton, and the Eagles’ other all-American halfback ace, Jerome Evans, were fre quently photographed for the picture services then. Early in 1955 there were ru mors that Miss Hughes and Thornton, who were constant ly seen together on the NCC campus, were “serious”. After Commencement at NCC when Miss Hughes received her de gree, the rumors increased. In mid-July, the event happened. Two times all-America and three times all-CIAA, the sp^dy Thornton was tmani- monsly acclaimed one of - the- CIAA's all-time great backs. He’s known to have offers to play in the Canadian League, and it’s reliably reported the Baltimore Colts are hot after him. The report will be denied at NCC but Thornton is also wanted back at the Eagles’ nest to help with backfield chores. He has one more quar ter’s academic work to be done, and he may return to NCC. Miss Hughes, who is known as "Buteh” to her friends, is a strikingly attractive young woman who often wears a closely cropped hair style that gives her a LesUe-Caron ap pearance. She is the daughter of Mrs. Mary Hughes, 1013 Webster St, Washington, D. 0. She formerly resided in Co lumbia, S. €., where she and Caroline were friends in high school. She is working in Washington at this time. Thornton is a native of Nor folk, Virginia ,and a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School there. His lather, Thomas Oalt, lives 043 Galt St., Norfolk.
