James E. Folsom of Ala bama to halt violence against Negroes in Montgomery, Ala. The homes of two Negro leaders in the current protest movement against bus segrega tion in Montgomery were bombed this .week. . Meanwhile, Naacp attorneys filed suit in thu U. S. District Court in Montgomery on behalf of Negro plaintiffe seeking a decree declaring the Alabama, statue requiring racial segrega tion in public buses unconstitu tional. The suit, filed on Feb. 1, also asked the court to enjoin Mayor W. A. Gayle, Jxank Park and other city cominlssioner?. Po lice Goodwin J. RujH>enthal from interfering with the plain tiffs in the exercise of their constitutional rijfht to ride pub- buses without state-imposed ra cial segregation. Representing the plaintiffs were NAACP attorneys Fr^ D! Gray of Montgomery and Ro-. bert L. Carter of New ^Yoris City. j In his message to uov. Fol som, diq>atched on Feb. 2, Mr. Wilkins specifically called upon the state official to “take ap- propiiate investigative and po lice action to restore law and order in Montgomery, to pro tect Negro citizens (here from further intimidation and vio lence, and to see that those re- spMisible for the bombings are brought to justice.” Nobody Injured The persons whose homes were bombed are the Rev. M. L. IQing and E. D. iN|xon.. Mr, King's wife and baby and Mr. Nixon's wife all were at home when the bombings occurred! but Were not harmed. No arrests have been made in the attempted murders. Wilkins pointed out in his telegram to Gov. Folsom that “these bombings follow a ‘get tough* policy announced by Mayor Gayle last week as> a means of ending the protest movement against city bus se gregation.” I Blayor Gayle, Wilkins noted, “is reported to be a member of the notorious Citizens Coun' cils." “It would appear, the NAACP leader continued, “that the ‘get tough' policy of the Montgomery city administra tion has created an atmosphere inciting to violence and riotous disorder which is a threat to the lives of all Negro citizens in Stop asthma agony Dr.Oviid's Compound crCgorsttM NEW METHOD UUNDRY Dry Cleanen Q^lity - Service Rni>oro St. nlAL 6959 the community.” ‘•Further, all this indicates the existence of a conspiracy to injure Negro citizens who are protesting peacefully against) municipal bus segregation. Benny Goodman ^tory Reveals Band Leader's Debt To Negro NEW YORK Benny Goodman’s great debt to Negro jazzmen and Negro musical sources is faithfully de scribed in “The Benny Good man Story'', the screen biogra phy of the famous clarinetist and bandleader, starring Steve Allen in the title role and Don na Reed, academy award win ning actress. The film depicts the musical career of Goodman from his childhood in Chicago to fabu lous fame as a jazz star. It shows how Benny as a boy in iihort pants becomes fasciiiated' by Negro jazz as played by Kid Cry’s New Orleans band on a riverboat. Kid Ory, the great New Orleans trombone star, plays himself in the picture. Steve Allen as Goodman re enacts vivid and moving inci-^ dents in the life of the famous bandleader and reveals thei clarinetist’s great respect for Negro musicians and arrangers In a scene in the Trombone Club in New York, Benny is shown taking part in an im- promtu jam session with pianist Teddy Wilson, played by him-, self, and drummer Gene Krupa. Later he hires botli, men to play with him as members of a jazz trio and the band. The story of the creative mu sical partnership between Goodman and the late Fletcher Henderson is pictured, Henderson, played by Sammy Davis, Sr., is so excited by hear-, ing broadcasts of Benny Good man’s new big band in the early 30’s that he introduces himself to the orchestra leader and of fers to write a series of arrange ments for the band. Hender-i son’s contribution to the suc cess of the Goodman bwd was an Important one, and the film describes it fully and movingly. In addition to Ory, Wilswn and Sammy Davis, Negro musi cians in the cast of “THE BEN NY GOODMAN STORY” In^ elude trumpeter Buck Clayton, shown as a sideman with the great Goodman archestra; and the inimitable Lionel Hampton, who with Goodman, Wilson and Krupa, helps to recreate the music of the Benny Goodman Quartet, one of the most re nowned small combinations in jazz history.
