Yorktown, somewhere at A letter enclosed with the money order declared: “I will nqt offer an excuse for the men in this division who did not give M a MOM SEME F Ala. Senate Kept From Hearing Explanation Of NAACP Position MONTGOMERY, Ala. Seeking to read a communi cation from the NAACP in the Alabama Legislature here re cently, Sen. Harlan G. Allen was ruled into silence by Lt Gov. Guy Hardwick who de clared that the message was not germane. The issue involved was that of a rgcording denounced as a ••fake” by Roy Wilkins, NAACP executive secretary. The re cording, which purportedly is of a speech by an NAACP organi zer, was played to the Alabama Senate in January, on the re quest of Sen. Sam Engelhardt. Wilkins’ telegram to the le gislature explained that the re cording was fraudulent and noted that correct information about the NAACP could be se cured by any officer or com mittee of the legislature, by means of a written request to Association headquarters. Later, Sen. Allen was told by Lt. Gov. Hardwick that he could rise to a point of personal privilege to read the NAACP message. Sen. Englelhardt’s comment regarding the Association’s tele gram was that it was an “ob vious and expected defense to offer.” SOLON SAYS X 'RIGHTS'CANT BE DODGED NEW YORK New York’s veteran Senator Herbert Lehman reiterated his stand this week at the Roose velt Day Dinner: that the Civil Rights’ issue cannot be ducked or dodged—particularly in the coming election. “I know this issue cuts across party lines. I have heard the wish expressed that the civil rights issue be taken out of politics. That wish is academic. And those who wish it are re flecting an Inadequate under standing of the inner workings of democracy.” Lehman served warning to Tifs party and its leaders: “In this election, the petiple are go ing to vote on the civil rights issue. It is their only opportu nity to express themselves ef fectively. It is the only way that anything, because there are not any.” CLEVEUND LOOKING FOR NAACP SEC'Y. CLEVELAND, Ohio The Cleveland Branch of the NAACP is seeking a new execu tive secretary, branch president Dr. James E. Levy announced this week. Dr. Levy explained that Ger ard A. Anderson, Jr., present executive secretary, has resign ed “to enter' another field of service.” Applicants for the position. Dr. Levy said, “should have academic accomplishments in the field of social work or other experiences in lieu of same.” He asked qualified applicants to write to him at the Clevstend NAACP, 7811 Cedar Avenue. “The Cleveland branch is one of the largest (NAACP) branches in the United States and has had a full time execu tive secretary since 1941,” he added. “support- Miss Lucy’s readmis sion” but to “demand that she be given the same status as all other students, with full rights, privileges, and responsibilities thereof.” they can give their mandate.” To Izaak Waltons' Wives, Or— Comin Home With the Scales BILL BUBNEB—AN8 Feati PEAR MRS. WALTON: Does the sight of freshly caught trout, bass or occan fish -and your husband’s “fishy” clothing (both ready for cleaning) make you wish you’d married a golfer or a horseman? Well, despair not, fair lady. Things are not as scaly as they used to be. IN CLEANING ihe fish, whether it’s to be scaled or skinned, fil- leted or not, knowing how is the answer. To scale'a fish, use a dull vegetable knife and work “against the grain.” By rub bing fingers over fish in sai|ie direction —yoiTll find even ^ stubborn scales are removed. ’Then, just clip off all fins at their hase with kitchen shears, sever head and tail with a sharp knife, slit belly from head to tail, remove entrails and ^se thoroughly under cold running water. skinning fish calU for a sharp knife. Slit skin along mid dle back and across belly. Join just behind gills and use pliers to remove skin. Work from up per forward corner down toward tail. Remove fins, head, tail, en- tn)Us and rinse. Simple? TO FILLET, slice into fish along one side of backbone, follow ribs down to end and bring knife to surface there. At irear of ribs, run knife around lend of backbone to loosen tail j flUet Repeat same on other side. I You should wind up with two r completely boned halves. > You can’t completely bone pike, pickerel and a few other types, but fish like bass, fluke, flounder, per;|k, etc., come as clean as a whistle. AS FOB CLEANING the fish erman, there are new lines of outerwear that shed water like a duck, and stains and wrin kles as well, because they’re made of fabric finished with Dow Corning silicones, those chemical cousins of indestruct ible sand and quartz. Identified as Syl-mer, these sili cone finishes aren’t removed by repeated dry cleaning and they keep your man presmtable with very little care in a'wide range of sports, rain and windbreaker jackets; coats, hoods, caps, shirts and slacks, many designed spe cifically for the outdoorsman. COMPANION TO noS is Syl- flex, another silicone used in I tanking -lather j to make possi ble, for the first time, complete ly weather proof sports man’s boots and shoes. Sylflex keeps water out, lets leath er breathe and keeps shoes soft and comfort-' able. These new silicones add tremendously to the appearance and comfort of both footwear and apparel. PREDICTION: That ihe object of your affections will no longer be taken for a hobo when slink ing home through the woods from his favorite stream or pond. His appearance will take both you and the fish by surprise. And, his improved health and your healthy state of mind may lead you to believe aoma of his largest fish stories. Contest To Name Best School Bus Driver On As Part Of Stafety Drive Anti-Mob Forces Are Applauded NEW YORK The student leaders and or ganizations at the University of Alabama “which have denoun ced mob violence” were com mended this week in a telegram from Herbert ^ L. Wright, NAACP youth secretary, to Walter Flowers, president of the University of Alabama student government. Wright’s message declared that “the shameful and abject capitulation tO forces of vio lence and lawlessness iias done much to discredit the Univer sity of Alabama among peoples throughout the world who be lieve in law and order and the democratic way of life.” The NAACP youth urged “student government and other responsible student organiza tions on campus” to not onlyt^ ^ from each of the State Highway Patrol’s 30 Administrative dis tricts.
