The Boy Scouts of America maintains that no boy can grow into the best Itind of citizen ship without recognizing his obligation to God. The Boy Scout Movement ■tresses the importanca ol the Scout's religious training ia the responsibility of tiie Church and the home. The Protestant Committee on Scouting in cooperation with the major Protestant denominations has developed this Church-cen- tered prggram for Scouts affili ated with Protesiant Churches and makes available the God and Country Award to Boy Scouts and Explorers who have fulfilled specific standards in volving their active participa tion in the total program of ^ their respective Church. Any Scout may, witli the approval of his Pastor or Unit Leader, par ticipate in this program whe ther his Unit ■•■s connected with his own Church or some othei institution. Each Scout carries on his S?out Program in his Unit, and he carries on the religious pro gram in his own Church under the direction of his Pastor. The adoption of this Church Award program by any Church is purely optional. It does not involve the advancement per sonal of the local Boy Scout Council, "^is is an award of the Church, made by the Church, on the fulfillment of religious standards established by the Church. Scouting recognizes the basic importance of religion In the process of character building and givM strong incentives to ward the attainment of spiri tual ideals. At the same time it has avoided any semblance of giving religious instruction be cause this is the prerogative and the responsibility of the Church and the home. Following is a summary of the requirements for the God and Country Award. These stan dards are included in the Ser vice Record Book which Unit Leaders throughout Durham j and County hav“ on hand. This book the boy roceivesr when the ■ A > Pastor enrolls him in the pro gram. 1. Regular attendance at Sun day School. 2. Regular Bible reading and personal prayer. 3. Know something of his own lo cal Church history and activity as outlined by his Pastor. 4. Name the books of the New Testament. 5. Render ten hours of MMigned personal fervlce to his Church. 6- Show evidence of Christian character and con-, duct. JThe Scout is expected to ful fill ail of these , standards. The Pastor may substitute equiva lent standards tot (3) and (4). There are different standards for Second Clas.? Scouts and First Class Scouts. The first six are for a Tenderfoot Scout in a Unit. There are t-?n for the Second Class Scout and the First Clasi Scout. In all of these the Pas tor may substitute the equiva lents. Unit Lenders, contact your Pastor and get your boys on the way. Scouters and Scouts, when you read this article Yours Truly will be attending the llto Na tional Intermediate Advance Training Course at Cimarron, New Mexico. The Boy Scouts of America owns a 127,000-acre Ranch here. A little learning is a dangerous tiling so 1 think I will try to learn a little more. Until the second week In June, Henry.
