Elks was elected as delegate from tiie State Temple to attend the £lics National Convention which convenes in Los Angeles, Cali fornia in August. At this time Mrs. Smith is also a Grand As sist. Escort appointed by the Grand Dtr. Ruler, Mrs. Nettie Carter Jackson. Principal of Gastonia High School. Others on program were: “Genial” Jene Potts of Charlotte, a well known disc jockey who launched the elabo rate souvenir boolis-mostly at testing the leadership of James Q. Falls who is Exalted Ruler of Moloch Lodge. The books were given to the audience. Prof. Ralph Gingles was in charge of the unveiling of the photographs appearing in Souvenir bool^s. , City Councilman, Nathaniel President of aU N. C. Llks, and ggp^e^ introduced Exalted Ru- Rev. Kemp P. Battle, State Grand Esteemed Lecturing Knight from Rocky Mt., will al so attend the National Conven tion At this time, due to the distance away, some of the regular attendance of N. C. Elks will not be as great. But there are a few whom we feel sure will aUend. Among these will be: Dtrs. Nora E. Bailey, Rocky Mt., Grand Traveling Deputy, 2nd Vice President of Dtr. Elks, and Past State recording Secre tary; Mrs. Bessie Chavis, Dis trict Deputy from Raleigh; Mrs. Tempsie McLaurin, a District Deputy from the Wilmington area; Mrs. Kemp P. Battle, State Directress of the N. C. Cottage fund for the John Brown Farm; Mrs. Tempsie Sanders, also a district deputy from the Tar- Davis, Charlotte and many others too. numerous to mention at this time. We feel sure that the crosscountry trip will be an enjoyable one for all who will go and we also feel that the Grand National Convention will be as gr^t as ever. Moloch Lodge of Elks cele brated their 32nd anniversary, and also honored nine charter members. They were: Brothers Napoleon Adams, Claude Blair, Vernon Curry, James Adams, Leroy Fite, Monroe Reid, John Holland, Johnny Williams, and Clarence Rainey. Guest speaker for the occasion was L. E. Aus tin, Publisher of the Carolina Times, Durham, Honorable Leon Schneider and Rev. J. A. Belton, Pastor of the Host Church which was the St. Ste phens A.M.E. Zion on North Marietta Street. Introducing Mr. Austin was Prof. T. Jeffers, ler Falls who addressed, con gratulated, and shook hands with the charter members. He also asked all EMk Brothers to stand. Speaking in behaU of Daughter Elks of Gastonia was this reporter who is State Re cording Secretary of Daughters of Elks and who organized the Local Temple. Last on program was an unexpected guest. He was newly elected Congressman Basil Whitener from the Eleven th District o? N. C. There were about eight clubs and sororities and other organi- .zations represented and their heads were introduced by Dis trict Deputy Grand Exalted Ru ler George Spencer of Gastonia. Mr. Austin spoke before .a ca the largest gatherings if its kind ever held in Gastonia. To try to tell what Mr. Austin said or even to comment on his address would take up more space than any newspaper will allow. I’m afraid. But we can say it was forceful, up to date, and will. I’m sure be remembered a long time by those who heard him. Atistin, being known far and wide for his gifted speeches. Inunediately following the program an eloborate reception was held in the modem, 3 story air-conditioned Elks Home on North York Street. As guests en tered the home a 3 tiered anni versary cake was right before their eyes, and huge baskets of flowers were placed all over the home. Most of them were gifts from other organizations. There were so many flowers that they had to line them in ar ray along the floor, there being no place else to put them. Visi tors were present from Char' lotte, N. C., Rock Hill, and Clo ver, S. C. So after a gala even ing and night finally guests and friends departed the Elits home about 3:00 a.m. all Elks nc doubt content with the know ledge of a program well put over.
