Herndon, president, opened the meeting with the 23rd Psalm, followed by silent prayer. Preceding the discus sion of new and old business, the minutes were read and adopted. Final plans were completed for a Harvest Ball to be held on November 8th. Mrs. Verdelle Johnston thank ed the hostess for the delicious repast on behalf of the club, and the meeting was adjourned to meet with Mrs. Esther Bald win In November. Members present at the meet ing Included: Mrs. Nellii: Toole, Naomi Thorpe, Lena Richard son, Sue Bullock, Verdelle Johnston, Minnie Forte, Minnie Gilmer, M. R.. Lennon, E. R. Herndon, Gladys McKinney, Lusyble Taylor, and Mattie La- kin. Returns From Vacation Mias Reida Curtis of Umstead St., has returned home from Amityville Long Island, N. Y., where she spent a pleasant va cation visiting her nelce Mrs. Hazel Garcia and Mr. Garcia ao(l her sister, Mrs. Iva Parrish. Visits Mother Miss Geraldine O. WiUiams was home this past weekend visiting her mother Mrs. Alma Williams and family of 507 Dunbar Street. Miss Williams is employed with the District of Columbia Public School System, Washington, D. C, Visited Hometown Hubert and Lloyd Curtis of Cleveland, Ohio, flew to Dur ham last week to visit their relatives, and to attend the homecoming of North Carolina CoUeg#. Mrs. Gladys McNeill of 1604 Fayetteville St., and Mrs. Flos sie E^J>unston of 716 Glenn St., are patients at Lincoln Hospital Visited Howard University Dr. and Mrs. Howard E, Wrtg’ht anrt unn visjtcd Washing ton, D. C. recently. They were accompanied by Mrs. Carlotta Holmes. The occasion for this visit was the Coronation cere monies of the Omega Pst Phi Fraternity at the Rankin Memo rial Chapel on Howard Univef' sity's campus. For their queen, the Omegas chose Mias Beverly Ann Wright, daughter ot Dr. and Mrs. Howard E. Wright of Durham. Following the corona tion, the queen and her couit, the Wright’s and Mrs. !Iolmes attended a reception at the Omega House. The reception was given in honor of the Queen and her Court. Mr. and Mrs. Henry White and children Michael and Sha ron of Roanoke, Va., were house guests of Mr. and Mrs, James G. Thompson and daughter Ly- nette of 302 Lawson St,, the weekend of the 10th. Mr. White is superintendent of the Burrell Memorial Hospital there. While here they attended the NCC’s homecoming activities. Mr. Amos Norwood of Phila delphia, Pa., was week-end guest of his brother and sister- in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Moses R. Norwood of Cecil Street. Presi dent of the Philadelphia Chap ter of Saint Augustine’s College^ alumni, Norwood was in this area attending homecoming ac tivities in Raleigh on last Satur day. Accompanying him to Dur ham was their mother, Mrs. Temple A. Norwood of Oxford. meeting will be held at the home of E. Sumpter, 2602 Whitt Oak Street, November 14. Mrs. Royal Entertains On Saturday night, October 20, Mrs. Lula M. Royal enter tained the 6-W Social Club in her new apartment on E. Petti grew Street, which was beauti fully decorated with colorful fall flowers. A delightful party plate was served by the hostess. After a period of games and fun, club prizes were presented to Mrs. Swannie Wilcher and Mrs. Pauline Boxley. The meeting ended with a surprise Birthday party for the vice president, Mrs. Marie Penny. She was the reci pient of many beautiful and useful gifts. As the jolly evening ended with "Happy Birthday” the hostess presented each with a Turkey apple and a slice of the birthday cake. Visiting guests were Mrs. June Wilcher, little Miss Pat Campbell,. Messrs Roosevelt Campbell, Ed. Box ley, and Wallace Royal. Other members present were mes- dames Annie Mitchell, Pearl Spearman, Ruth Campktell Irene Hall, Ann Goods, Elizabeth Ed wards and Virginia Pltchford. The O. P. BeavHiiert During the month of October, the Oakwood Park Beautiflers held their regular meeting at the homes of Mrs. C. Sanders, and Mrs. G. Stone with the pre sident, Mrs. C. Sanders and vice president, Mrs. C. : Blunt presiding. Reports were ’heard from the following committees; Program, Tourinjr and Recrea tion. Mrs. C. ’Tucker won & blue ribbon for her flower arrange ment at the' Flower Show given by the Lyon' Park Rose GardM Club. Refreshments were served at each meeting and members attending were Mesdames C. Tucker, G. Carter, M. Favors, C. Blunt, G. Frazier, O. Brown, C. Sanders, R. Fulton, E. Sump ter, J. Perry, I,i. James, C. Ro berson, R. PrTdjgen. The next Azalea Garden Club On Monday, October 22, the Azalea Garden Club met with Mrs. Harris on Rosewood Ave nue, the home was beautifully arrayed with many kinds of fall flowers. After short opening ac tivities Mrs. Effle Cotton, the president, presided over the business session. During this period flower arrangements were discussed, five of which re ceived blue ribbons at the flow er show sponsored by the Lyon Park Garden Club, the preceed- ing day. Dates were set for the Holiday House December 16 and the Christmas Party December 27. Mrs. Harris served her guest and club members i delicious repast. Mrs. Gladys McNeill closed the garden gate as she expressed the club members’ thanks and appreciation to Mrs. Harris for being such a graci ous hostess, although convales cing from a multiple fracture of her right leg. Runners-up were Miss Na omi Williams, left, who placed third and Miss Anne McCoy, right. Who finished second. Miss Williams was sponsored by the Carolina Times and Miss McCoy by DeShazor’s Beauty College. The activities, many and va ried, were given by each mem ber who try each day to do some good deed. .The work of the true iVIissionary, ’'Because the fields are white but the laborers are few.” The lesson taken front the “Helper” "Look unto Him and He will Direct thy Path," “The Field of Individual Service” “Workers Together With God." "The Value of Worship in the Missionary Meeting.” These were beautifully discussed by Mrs, Boykin and were enjoyed by all,. Mrs. Rhodes served a delici ous course, after which sentence prayers were said for/Mrs. Har rington. The recently established em ployment agency of St. Mark ABIE Zion Church is an Inde pendent charitable organization with no connection with any other employment agency Jn the city. Hie committee will cultivate relationships with various em ployers in Durham for the pur pose of placing workers. This service will be free of charge and open to the entire com munity. Hill Golden Age Club held its fifth anniversary on October 28, at the W. D. HUl Recreation center on Fayette ville Street. Mrs. Kitola Curtis was mistress of ceremony. The supervisor, Mrs. C. G. Hargrove gave words of welcome. The his tory of the club was given by the president, Mrs. M. B. Rob bins. Mrs. D. A. The banquet followed the next evening, October 23 at ^e same place, with the president, Mrs. Robbins presiding. Mrs. Carlotta Holmes in a brief but timely speech gave the group some fine words for thought. A delicious dinner was served by the members. Around fifty per sons were in attendance Includ* ing friends. Remarks were made by I. R. Holmes, director of the Center. This was a good time for everyone, and a gala affair. The Arts and Crafts Depart ment of the Drucilla Chapter order of the Eastern Star spon sored a Bed-Spread Raffle for the benefit of the Chapter on October 25. Mrs. Gladys A. Dawkins is chairman of this de partment and Is happy to say that Mrs.. Nellie J. Bynum of 1111 Cornell Street was the win ner of the bed-spread. Mrs. Rhodes Entertains for Her Mother, Mrs. Harrington The Sylvia Williams Mission Circle met at the- home of Mrs. Gladys Rhodes at 508 Price St., on October 7 at 4 o’clock with Mrs. Leathers presiding.
