SATUKDAT, DEC. 8, 1956 A THE CAROLINA TIMES A new and more powerful vaccine agaimt tuberculosis is being developed at the research ''xnter of the North Carolina Sanitarium System in Chapel Hill. Above are scenes from the testing center in Chapel Hill. Although the testing program is incomplete, the new vaccine- R1 Rv vaccine has proven ef fective in a majority of guinea pigs tested at the center. The re search i* made possible through funds provided by the Medical Research Committee of the American Trudeau Society. Christmas Seal sales, and the Ruth Coltrane Cannon Re search Fund. The research pro ject at Chapel Hill i* directed by H. Mac Vandiviere, director of laboratories at the Chapel Hill Center. Trial-Ridden Love Of White, Poppy Cannon Told In Ebony CHICAGO The heart warming love story of NAACP’s Walter White and his white wife, Poppy Cannon, is featured in the January EBONY. The story, taken from a book written by Miss Cannon and finished prior to White’s death, is entitled The Love That Never Died. It describes the Joys and heartaches the two en dured during their seven-year marriage. They first met in 1^29. Poppy was 20—White was 35. Despite infrequent contacts, a warm at traction developed between them. They fought against it and'' for one period went ten years without seeing each other. Then in 1944 they met at a luncheon and resumed their friendship. It was three years before they were divorced and free to marry each other, she writes in EBONY. In July, 1949, 20 years after their first meet ing Walter White and Poppy Cannon were married. She writes that even though White never admitted it, she knew that their marriage added to his problems in the NAACP. Powerful forces within the As sociation wanted to oust him. He was told before the marri age, that Negro women would severely criticize him. They learned that it was Negro wo men who supported them.most. Famous people like Mary McLeeod Bethune and Lena Home stuck by the Whites and dispelled the myth. - . .ii- When White and Poppy were married he had already suffered many heart attacks. After they had been married for a few months, the attacks were more frequent. Poppy tells how she vainly pleaded with him to slow down. He promised to slack off, but events made it difficult for him to keep his word. In the spring of 955, after a siege of illness and sevei^ years of mar ried bliss, Walter White died suddelny in Poppy’s arms. When asked whether she will continue her husband’s fight against bigotry, Mrs. White, even if it’s only Mrs. Walter White, is committed to the cause forever.” Morgan Honors Founders On Its 90th Birthday BALTIMORE, MD.
