Fatal Beating
Melvin William McCollum,
49, of 309 East 8th Street,
pleaded guilty to second degree
murder In the fatal beating of
Margie Lee Transou on Nov.
23rd. He was sentenced, last
Wednesday, December 9th In
Fofsyth Superior Court to serve
18 to 29 years In prison for the
murder. Judge Frank M. Arm
strong of Troy, passed sentence
after McCollum, who had been
charged with first degree mur
der, entered a plea to the lesser
offense.
Testimony revealed that Me
CoUum and the victim struggled
throughout the house while he
beat her munerclfully with a
metal chair. The chair, an ex
hibit, was twisted and broken
from the force of the blows.
McCollum, who has been ar
rested 32 times since 1935 for

Farmers of America of Lincoln
High School is sending out their
appeal to all local citizens for
toys for their toy drive for
children in this community ac
cording to its President, Richard
Fikes.
Each year the members of the
local chapter sponsors this acti
vity as a part of their commu
nity service activities in their
annual program of work. They
are requesting all parents, pa
trons and friends to send, bring
or caU the school If they have
toys to contribute to this acti
vity. The toys may be new, old,
needing repairs.
All toys received are repair
ed, repainted and distributed
each year to children in the
conununity who might be for
gotten on Christmas eve night.
