Birthday Party Held For Miss Willie Mae Bailey A surprise birthday party for Willie Mae Bailey was held at her home, 412 Mlncey Street, Wednesday night, November 20. The party given by her sister, Sylvia, was a gay attalr lasting! irom seven to eight o’clock. The honoree was delightfully sur- ] pnsed to the amusement of the guests present when she dis covered that a calce made for the occasion was lor her instead ol her grandmother as her sister had led her to believe. Zion Conference The Central North Carolina Conference will convene in Raleigh at Rush Memorial A. M.- E- Zion Church on East Car- barrus Street from November 27 through December 1. Rev. Gfiorge Tharrington, pastor of Kyles Temple A. M. E. Zion Church, will deliver the annual sermon on Wednesday aft ernoon at 7:30, and music will be furnished by the chorus of the church. On Thursday afternoon the Laymen’s Association is sponsoring a “Bride’s Contest” which will convene from 7 to 8 where Mrs. Mable Powell will reign as bride-elect from Kyles Temple Church. Other brides participating are: Raleigh District, Miss Jeimie Stocks; Laurinburg District, Miss Betty McCrimmon; Stanford District, Mrs. E. A. Armstrong; Fayetteville Dis trict, Miss Fatrcia McPherson. Each of the brides will be attended by one bride’s maid each church of the five districts. There will be a bus leaving for Raleigh to the conference on Wednesday at 6:30 P. MRS. THEODORE B. THORNTON Wedding Vows For Miss Ingrain And Lt. Thornton Spoken In Baptist Rites The wedding of Miss Carolyn Monje Ingram of Durham, and Lieutenant Theodore Bumls Thornton, also of Durham, was solemnized Saturday evening November 2 at seven o’clock at the White Rock Baptist Church. Dr. Miles Mark Fisher performed the double ring ceremony. The bride is the daughter of Mrs. Bernice H. Ingram and the late Charles J. Ingram and Lt. Thornton is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Bumls Hillman Thornton, all of Durham. The ceremony was performed before a background of Ore gon ferns and emerald foliage, interspersed with standard baskets of white chrysanthe mums, carnations and gladi olas. Ethel Owens, club presi dent, conducted the devotional followed by a brief business ses- ■ibn. The group made plans for their annual hair style show. Dogwood Garden Club Dogwood Garden Club met at the home of Mrs. Harvey Dodson at 1307 Glenn Street, Monday, Novonber 18th. The Garden Gate was opened by Miss Ora Harrison. Mrs. Susie Martin, president of the club, discussed some very good points on the procedures of planting and care for Azaleas and Bulb plants of the season. A silver tea will be giyen by the club Sunday December 1, at the home of Mrs. Susie Martin, 800 Price Street. The tea will be from 4 to 6 P.M. John H. Gattis presented a program of organ music prior to the ceremony and Mrs. Margaret K. Goodwin sang, “If I Could Tell You” and “Through The Years”. The bride, given In marriage by her brother-in-law, F. V. Allison, Jr., wore a formal gown of Chantilly *lace and tulle over bridal satin. The fitted bodice featured a sweet heart neckline edged with lace. The long fitted sleeves ended in caila points. The bouffant skirt had a volumi nous panel of lace in front tending to the floor and a lace paMi in the back formed a (blUbwing chapel train. ' The skirt also featured insets of lace on the tulle. veil of illusion was at tached to a tiara of seed pearls and iridescent sequins. The bride’s only ornament was a single strand of pearls, a gift of the groom. She carried a wedding^ handkerchief of Ini^ ported Irish linen appliqued with Alencon lace and seed pearls in a wedding bell de sign. Her prayer book was top ped with a purple throated or chid with a cascade of tube roses fastened to satin stream ers. Mrs. Audrey I. Fairley, sis ter of the bride, of Washing ton, D. C., was matron of hon or. She wore a Crown Gold' iridescent taffeta gown which featured the harem liemline. She wore matching headpiece, mitts and satin pumps. She car ried a bouquet of bronze and gold ciurysanthemums caught with matciiing ribbon. Miss Carolyn A. Thornton, sister of the groom was maid of honor. Her attire and t>ouquet was like that of the matron of 'honor. The bridesmaids were Misses Ann Rhoden, Charlotte, Shir ley A. Moore, college room mate of the bride, Miami, Fla., Gladys Fortune and Deiois Winston, ix>th of Durham. They wore dresses of irides- -cent Lime Peel designed like those of the honor attendants. They carried cascade bouquets of gold chrysamthemums with xnatcliing ribbon. The groom had as liis best man, his brother, Victor H. Thornton of Atlanta. Ushers were Berry Coleman, Greens boro, William Miller, Wil mington, Cary Booker, Hen dersonville, William Cassidy and Reginald Spaulding of Durham. For her daughter’s wedding Mrs. Ingram wore an ice blue dress of rosepoint lace over taffeta with matching accesso^ ries. Her corsage was of pink rosebuds. The groom’s mother was dressed in blushing pink appli qued satin with matching ac cessories. She wore a corsage of pink rosebuds. Immediately following the ceremony a reception was held at the Algonquiil Club. Assis ting at the reception were Misses Florida Fisher and Geneva Mebane, Mesdames I. £. Turner, G. B. Smith, Mabel Watson, W. M. Grandy, M. L. Newby and Mr. W. A. Reeves. For her wedding trip the bride wore a baby blue knit ted sheath with matching ac cessories and the orchid lifted from her Prayer Book. Mrs. Thornton is a graduate of Bennett College, Green sboro, N. C., and is presently working ,to)ys]^ a Master’s De gree in Phy^hiatric Social Work at the University of North Carolina at'diapel Hill, N. C.. Lt. Thornton , is a graduate of A and T College, Greensboro .andis a member of the Omega Psi Phi Fratermty. He is pre sently serving a tour of duty with the Signal Corps of the United States Army. ' Among the pre-nuptial acti vities for the bride a surprise shower was given by her classmates at the University of North Carolina, Miat Patri cia Aldrige and Mrs. Jane Pfouta. Mrs. Ellen S. Alston, Execu tive secretary-treasurer of the Woman’s Baptist Home and Foreign Missionary Convention of North Carolina, will deUver the Annual Message. Mrs. Alston is a native of North Carolina. She received her high school training at Eng lish High and Latin School, Cambridge, Massachusetts. She received her A.B. degree at Shaw University. Mrs. Alston vras active in the civic and church affairs in Franklin Coun ty. She was Secretary of the Franklin County 'Teachers’ As sociation. Zion Church Adds New Instructor In School Of Music Mrs. Sarah Barden, wife of the Mr. Elihu Barden, a professor at A and T College, Greensboro, will assist Mrs. Speaks in the St. Mark’s School of Music. Mrs. Barden comes to t^s community with a rich back ground of training an experience in the field of music.
