Service; and P. H; Stone of the
Federal Extension officc who di
rected the worshop.
The speakers described the vast
changes which are taking place
in agriculture and rural life:
Farms becoming larger and fewer,
mechanized atid specialized with
increased emphasis on livestock;
Other changes incliide higher edu
cational level of farmpeople, a
decline in home production of
food and tlothlng, and a tendency
more and more to purchase such
items. ‘,
It was pointed’out also that the
schools ar« being consolidated, the
number of rural non-farm families r
is increasing, and the conccntra-|
tion of farm people by age groups
is tending to fall among the young
and the old.
Following the addresses, the
supervisors, \vho djrect the work
of more than 800 farm and home
demonstration agents, met for
three days in small workshop
groups to analyze their Extension
programs and make adjustments to
help meet the changing needs of
rural people.
It was suggested that supervis
ion be broadened to provide fof
more effective recruitment, place-
mentl and tnihiing of ageitts, and'
more careful surveillance of pro
gram planning and program execu
tion.
In line with the changing agri
cultural economy, the farm dem
onstration supervisors placed in
creased emphasis on adequate
famfly-sisfed farms, higher efficien
cy, pasture development, and
livestock production.
Taking a look at today’s rural
home, the home demonstration su
per viv.sors said more work needs
