Negroes Depend Upon Farming, Allied Industries, Farm Report ^ys Procrcss of the 65,999 Negro farmen of North Carolina is des- 'Hbed in the recently released an nual report of the State Extension Service. The report says that over 500,000 Colored people in the State are directly dependent upon agricul ture for a livelihood, and another 2!t0,000 are employed in industries which depend upon agriculture for th^ir ryw materials. Although the average size of farms operated by Negroes in the •St|te is only 43 acres, compared with 77.5 for white farmers, throuih sound management and oigher agricultural slcills, many of these Negro farmers are earning f good living, the report (iontinues. The success pf these farmers is birds last year. attributed in large part to the worii of farm and home demonstra tion agents. In 1910 the Negro staff consisted of one agent who served three counties. Today there are 137 agents, supervisors, and specialists assisting Negro farm families in 52 counties. Last year these woricers gave ad vice and counsel to 45,110 farm families and 21,737 rural nonfarm families. These included more than 50,000 4-H club boys and girls. Some of these 4-H’ers, for example are in poultry chains which accelerate the distribution of better quality flocks. There are 30 such chains in the State. C. —The doc trines of three scholars of Protest ant theology will be discussed by Dr. Jaroslav Pelikan, Jr., at Ho-i ward University, Tuesday, April 21. Dr. Pelikan will be the principal speaker at the 15th annual religi ous lecture series sponsored by the Howard University School of Re ligion, the Virginia Theological Seminary and the Council of Churches, National Capital Area. C. —Senator Huljert H. Humphrey (D., Minn.) Tuesday urged the House Ways and Means Committee to favorably report a bill which provides for Federal standards to extend and improve the state unemployment insurance programs. The measure he is supporting (H. R. 3547) is identical to a Sen ate bill (S. 791) ^troduced by Senator John Kennedy and co sponsored by Senator Humphrey and 29 other Senators. In his statement Senator Hum phrey urged the Committee to con sider Federal standards to (1) re quire individual benefits equal to not less than 50 per cent of w'eek- ly wages so long as that amount is not more than two-thirds of ^he average weekly wage in the state, and (2) esUklish a uniform bene fit period of 39 weeks. As a third step “to preserve the unemployment insurance system and to permit it to serve the great humanitarian purposes for which it was designed, Senator Humphrey called for the establishment of “a national re-lnsurance fund fin anced out of Federal unemploy ment insurance taxes to under write the State reserves when they are levying the full amount of the j tax and are still unable to meet, their benefit obligations.” _ | 0 Congratulations!
