The win establisheu the Rams as the team to watch in the up coming CIAA track and field meet to be staged this year at Virginia State College on May 2. Four stalwarts carried the Ham colors to fame, including their world famed hurdler Elias Gilbert, who ran a leg in each of the races. Bob Manning. Wilbur Ross’ Rams captured the 440 and 880 sprint relays, the 480 yard shuttle hurdle relays, and Joe Middleton took first in the hop, step and jump, to lead all CIAA schools at the meet. North Carolina College, Morgan State and Howard University were the other schools from the CIAA par ticipating in the meet In the sprint relays, the Rams, Penn'led by Elias Gilbert, world record holder in the 220 yard low hurdles, took first in the 440 relay with a 42,7 clocking. Following Gilbert hi this event were Bob Manning, Charley Lewis, and Frank Bowens. In the 880 yard relay the Rams ran a 1:28.1, finishing ahead of Penn Stale, Morgan Slate, How ard, and Iowa. On a track hidden by a couple of inches of water, the Rams’ shut tle nurdle relay quartet of Carl Brown, Russell Rogers, Middleton, and Gilbert sped to a 1:01.4 time. The head judge, however, declared Basil Ince of Tufts as the winner. Both runners were clocked in identical times of 48.3.
