Ql'ANTICO, Va. — A band of
thir.clads from Winston ■ Salem
Tcaehcrs College scored a triple
in the two-day track and field ex
travaganza at Quantico’s Butler
Stadium, and racked up enough
points to emerge from the meet,
sharing top honors with
State’s Nittany Lions.
The win establisheu the Rams
as the team to watch in the up
coming CIAA track and field meet
to be staged this year at Virginia
State College on May 2.
Four stalwarts carried the Ham
colors to fame, including their
world famed hurdler Elias Gilbert,
who ran a leg in each of the races.
Bob Manning. Charley Lewis,
and Frank Bowens were the Rams
writing their names in gold in the
mud of the Quantico track Satur
day.
Wilbur Ross’ Rams captured the
440 and 880 sprint relays, the 480
yard shuttle hurdle relays, and
Joe Middleton took first in the
hop, step and jump, to lead all
CIAA schools at the meet. North
Carolina College, Morgan State
and Howard University were the
other schools from the CIAA par
ticipating in the meet
In the sprint relays, the Rams,
Penn'led by Elias Gilbert, world record
holder in the 220 yard low hurdles,
took first in the 440 relay with a
42,7 clocking. Following Gilbert
hi this event were Bob Manning,
Charley Lewis, and Frank Bowens.
In the 880 yard relay the Rams
ran a 1:28.1, finishing ahead of
Penn Stale, Morgan Slate, How
ard, and Iowa.
On a track hidden by a couple
of inches of water, the Rams’ shut
tle nurdle relay quartet of Carl
Brown, Russell Rogers, Middleton,
and Gilbert sped to a 1:01.4 time.

Two years ago the quartet of

Gilbert ranks with the topflight

The foursome of Bobby Dobbs.
Willie Ward, Mason O’Neal, and
Walt Johnson set a new Quantico
Relays record as they sped the
medley distance in 3:29.6.
In the individual events Walt
Johnson, NCC’s quarter - iniler,
really showed what he could do in
the special 440 yard run. ,He was
picked as the winner, by two
judges, while two others picked
him as the second place finisher.
The head judge, however, declared
Basil Ince of Tufts as the winner.
Both runners were clocked in
identical times of 48.3.

It is generally believed that Ince
was awarded the race because he
is better known that Johnson.
Middleton took the hop, step
and jump with a clearing of 45

highly regarded sprinter, Paul
Winder, finished fifth in the 100
yard dash.
In the 120 yard high hurdles,
former CIAA harrier, Lee Calhoun,
who carried the colors, of North
Carofina College, captured the

who finished more than two feet
