Legislation has been I expected in the General Assembly to have the Board members elected i by a city-wide vote. The PTA Council letter to Dur ham County’s General Assembly man Hill, which was signed by Council president L. B. Frasier, restated the organization's opposi tion to the proposed change. It read: At a receat meeting of the Dur ham PTA Council, the members felt that a statement to you concer ning the matter of selecting City School Board members should be given. In a matter of such importance, In which we are vitally interested, as repressntatlves of a large seg-j ment of our population, we felt that the nvatter should not pussj over without your knowing our' views. I • We oT)served from the newspaper I releases that you asked the City PTA Council if it wanted a change in the *way the city School Board members are being selected. We have read and studied the replies of that (ir*ganization and the reac-| tion of other fnterestcd titizens.) The Durham PTA Council un animously agreed and went on re cord as opfMsing a change in the present appointive method of selec- ing members to the City School Board of Education. The proposed xjhangc was included in the School Consolidation Proposal which was defeated by an overwhelming vote] of the people.
