C. founder of ^ 6irl Scouting [o be Honored Tiic story of tlie iKJfiinning of G'iri Scouting in this country is a siory of tlic tireless energy and enthusiasm of one woman, Juliette Low. The handicap of poor health at>d almost total deafness did not hinder her. A charming and energetic wom an, Juliette Gordon Low, returned to Savannah, Georgia, in 1912 from England, where she had met Lord Baden Powell, founder of the Boy | Scouts and Guide movements. | She had been so impressed with the work he was doing that she was determined to do something like this for the girls in America. She had wired her family and friends that she was bringing home the biggest thirtg yet. It was a hard task and .took many hours of tireless work and effort. But today, 48 years later, over three million girls follow the rules of the Girl Scout Promise, and they honor the memory of Juliette Low, who gave the world more than just an organization— she gave them a key for better fuller, living. This week is celebrated each year by our total Girl and adult memtKsrship in America. It is the week in which the birthday of the founder, Juliette Gordon Low occurs, October 31. World tensions are engaging the concern of most of us these days and the Girl Scout organiza tion is no exception. From Nation al Headquarters on down to our local Councils we are working hard to see that the activities of the Girl Scouts help girls of to day in three avenues: achieve ment of seeurity,_ of usefulness, and of accomplishment.
