' National Council of Negro Women Region III Conference—1961 The National Council of Negro Women’s Regional Conference was held last week-end at Penn Aca demy St. Helena Island, South Ca rolina. Miss Louise Latham is di rector of Region No. 3 and pre sided over the business sessions. Mrs. V. Bessele Atwell, Execu tive Director of the National Coun cil of Negro Women, Inc., with hMdquarters in Washington, D. C., was Conferience Leader. Region Number three is comprised of N. G., South Carolina, Tennessee, Ga., and Florida. There were forty-five Council members, in attendance The theme of the Conference. was “Higher Horizons For Unity of Purposes and Unity'.of Action,” and the Conference I*bcus was "The Local Cojjncil at Work,” 'Jhe Sbnferenc6 opened Satiftv d^ morning with the President’s Roundtable, “This Is Our Best,” following registration. Each presi dent gave a summary of the best activity that had happened in their Council during the past year. During a break, we were led in a “Sing Along” by Miss Thelma Deinoff and Mrs. Atwrii at piano. Mrs. Ellen Alston of Raleigh led a most impressive meditation follow ing the “Sing Along.” The morning Conference com prised the following: presenta tions, adoption of rules,^ report of I960 regional conference by Mrs. Emma Randolph and the following committees were appointed; Reso lutions, Time and Place, Report ers, Nomination during the mid fl^oi?iin& sessiop.;„ - Mre. A. ^^ssell-'Xt#ell, Execu tive Director NCNW spoke on ‘‘A National Organization at Work” and “The Council Idea.” Every coundl member there felt that she had caught something from tile workshops that she could carry back and use effectively. The work shops were Structure, Membership, Program and Finance. After lunch, pictures were taken. We got into the afternoon ses sion with a “Sing Along” and In spirational Moments led by Mrs. Lu Sybil Taylor. A summary of the workshops was given and then a coke break during which the fine fellowship was still bubbling. The Regional Director, Dean Louise Latham, spoke on “Our Challenge” the Mary McLeod Bethune Memo rial at' length, emphtisizing ways and means by which our gdai can i>e reached. Following the afternoon session, the management of Penn Academy entertained the group at an pys- ter Supper. We relaxed during the evening around a|| open fire and listened as Messrs. SiCeloff and Firth gave the history of St. Hel ena Island. During the Sunday morning ses sion, Mrs. Atwell gave aii “Evalu ation of the Conference” which was folowed by reports from the various committees. The meeting closed with the singing of “Now The Day Is Over” and the Mizpah led by Mrs. Alston. A delightful week-end of fine fellowship and relaxation. was founded out by our visit to the historic Middleton Gardens en- route home. Zion Church, will speak, Sunday,, May 7, at New Belhel Baptist Church, for the Junior Department of the Durham Interdenominational Ush ers Union. Others appearing on the program are Clint Davis, Wal ter Jackson and John Dixon. The Youth Choir of New Bethel Church will render the music. There will be a crowning of the Queen who makes the largest financial report.
