Carpet Envoy Gets Red Deal In Maryland HAGERSTOWN, Md.—Dr. Wil liam Fitzjohn, a Negro diplomat from the new African Republic of Sierra Leone, returned to Hag-! erstown for a civic welcome last week—three .months after he was refused service in a public restau rant because of his race. Dr. Fitzjohn, traveling by auto mobile under a state police escort from Washington, was met at the city limits by Hagerstown Mayor Winslow Burhans and given a red carpet reception by officials of this city and 35,000 residents. “I would like the nations to kniow they will be welcome in Hagerstown” said the mayor as he presented Dr. Fitzjohn with a bouquet of two dozen roses at a brief ceremony on U. S. His plaque was presented by Dr. W. L. T. Miller, Greensboro, chair man of the Citation Committee. The awards were presented at the annual joint banquet held on Wednesday evening at the new Service Center. The dinner address was deliver ed by L. A. Oxley, former official of the U. S. Department of Labor^ Washington, D. C. On the evening before, Dr. Watts, in the annual president’s address had urged the group to “lead the fight to remove segre gation from the North Carolina scene as it affects medical care” and to “encourage the growth and development of the Negro doctor in his community, because of the firm conviction that his presence has a favorable effect on the level of medical care available to our people in any situation." The medics voted to continue efforts to gain approval for full memberships for Negro physicians in the Medical Society of North Carolina. New officers elected to head the organizations included: Medics— Dr. W. W. Hoffler, Elizabeth City; Dr. Roy S. Wynn, Charlotte, presi dent-elect; Dr. G. W. Allen, Fay etteville, first vice president; Dr. Hubert E. Eaton, Wilmington, sec ond vice president; Dr. J. S. Col son, recording secretary and Dr. W. T. Armstrong, Rocky Mount, secretary-treasurer. Dr. R. E. Daw son, Dui'ham. was named to the executive board. The dentists elected as their other officers: Dr. €. W. Floyd, Gastonia, president; Dr. A. L.
