COLDEST NIGHT OF FALL CATCHES SCOUT CAMPOREE BY J. e. CHEEK On October 27 and 28, The Family Play Ground of the Me morial Recreation Forest, Inc. located in Warren County was the site of the annual Camporee of 135 Boy Scouts of America. Although, on the night of the 27th I he temperature dropped to the lowest record of the fall, the young and brave Scouts and their Troop leaden from Oxford, Stor- all Hendenon, Warrepton, Carv er Sohflfol, Bolloi^ville, Llouis- burgh, Franklinton, Riley Hill and Bunn, slept in the Forest under 30 small tents prepared for the occassion. Russell P. McLean, Pleid Direct or of the Occoneechee Council Boy Scouts of America, and his assistants Hubert E. Lison and Robert W. After an interesting meeting of making plans for coming events, Mrs. Lucas served a Pre-Thanks- giving Dinner with all the trim- ings. Protest Arrest RICHMOND, VA.—The Richmond branch of the NAACP has issued a formal protest over the arrest earlier this month of the State NAACP executive secretary Lest er Banks for refusi'ng- to leave the dining room of a railway Station; The protest was sent in the form of a letter to. Lynchburg Mayor William C. Vaughan. Bpnks was arrested-on Oct: 10 in the dining room of the Nptfojk and Western Railway station where he had requested scrvicc. When Banks protested to arrest ing oifficors that he was entitled to service there under the recent ICC banning discrimijiation in inter state travel facilities, Lynchburg police reportedly they-knew noth ing about the law but were acting under Virginia law which required segregation at the station. The letter from the Richmond NAACP to Lynchburg Mayor Vaughan described the police action as “rank defiance” of feder al law. The lette.' was sfsned by David Lonnley, chairman of the Richmom' NAACP Iz-gal Redress Committee. A similar letter was sent to the Richmond News Leader.
