Review of
Arrests In S. C.
WASHINGTON — The arrest
and conviction of 373 NAACP
youth demonstrators must be
reviewed by the South Carolina
courts, according to an 8-1 de
cision of the U. S. Supreme
Court, Justice Tom C. Clark dis
senting.
The students were convicted
for breach of the peace when
they marched on the business
section of Orangeburg in 1960
in four different groups to pro
test city and state segregation
policies. They were arrested and
crowded into outdoor compounds
in cold weather. Sentences of
$50 each and 30 days in jail
imposed by the magistrate’s
court were upheld 'by the First
Judicial Circuit Court and the
State Supreme Court.
The U. S. Supreme Court va
cated the ataite decisions and
directed that the convictions be
reconsidered In light of its re
cent opinion In a similar case
