Wilkins Attacks North Carolina For 'Tokenism' in Integration GREENSBOKO — Declaring that “tokenism must go," Roy v/ilkins, executive secretary of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, rapped the South in general and North Caro lina in partic\ilar for its pooi shCAiing on school desegregation in an address at Bennett College, i Sunday afternoon. ' Wilkins, who spoke on “Citizen-. >ihip Resnonstbility with Respect to Orderly Desegregation,' staled that although the U. S. Supreme Court decision ordering school do- spsregation was handed down iri 1954, actual school desegregation has taken plrce at a rate of less that one per cent e year. “At this rate,’ ’he said, “It would take about 99 more years before wr hav£ complete desegregation." The NAACP executive ha( words of praise for North Caro lina for having the second largest state NAACP organization in the country and fcr Governor Terry I Sanford for a “rare end valuable ■statement” regarding the need for equal employment opportunities) for all citizens. “Perhaps under the stimulus of the thinking of men like Gov. Mr.' Powell should know better tnan anyone else that the healing pow er of confessed error.” Wilkins pointed out that the school desegregation decision car ried a mandate for those seeking to enforce segregation and a re sponsibility for everyone else—^ black and white He declared an "omnibus education in a space age” and urged the young people of today to exercise their respon- sibi'ity lest it, like a muscle, grow flabby from lack of u?e. “What we need," he said, “is affirmative and aggressive action. A banquet, at which the congre gation presented a resolution ex pressing its appreciation for Rev. .Mason’s services, was the second of the special services.
