By MASCO YOUNG
NEW YORK — They call
Jimmy Smith the “King of
Soul” among jazz organists, and,
frankly, there are few people
around v^ho’!! dispute Jimmys
claim to that title - although
heddin’t bestow it upon himself.
“I think that it’s a wonder
ful thing,’ he onee-eaid, “to do
what you like to do most - and
in my case it’s playing the or

well enough to pay you for
doing it.”
Jlhimy, whose smiling boy

albums in record shops all over
the nation, has not let his suc
cess give him the .“big-head”.
He’s a young Talented jazz of"
ganist who seems to be fully
aware of where he came from
and where he’s going.
“Many people have been good
to me, and I .want to be good to
many people,” he said.
Jimmy still lives on East ^
Tulpehocken street in Phila-1
delphia’s Germantown, where ]
he’s known as a congenial neigh

crab grass and politics with his
nelfehbors on those rare oc
casions when he’s relaxing at
home. Durlh'g recent weeks he
has bfosn In-Chicago, Detroit and
Atlanta, but right now he’s
fairly close to home at the Apol
lo Theatre in New York, where
he shares the bill with Duke
Ellington and his orchestra.
His latest album, “Hobo Flats,”
got a whopping plug on nation
wide televison when it was
recently introduced on the “To
night” show with Jonnny Car
son. This new album, which up
his total to around 25 albums,
features organ solos and big
name band music with contem
porary- and standard tunes.
Jimmy records for both Blue
Note and the MGM label.
He’s married to the former
Edna Joy Goins, an outstand
ing lyric soprano who once
taught music in Philadephia’s
public schools. They have one
son, Jimmy Jr., 3, and are ex
pecting another little Smith to
join the happy family around
September.
