Holidays will be longer and vacation budgets more substantial — nearly $25.- 000,000 will be spent — and «- bout 85 per cent of all vacation ers will travel by car. But any one of many avoidable mistakes can cause inconveni ence, spoil a family’s whole va cation or even lead to tragedy — all unnecessarily. According to the editor* of the Mobil Travel Guide, here are some possible mistakes and the way to avoid them. One of the worst spoilers is car trouble. Have your car checked thoroughly before you leave home. Some points often o- verlooked are: Brakes — Are they too “soft?” Do they pull to the left or right? 1 Steerinfi wheel — is there too muchmuch play? Wheels — Are they in balance? Are the tires in go^ condition? Lights — Have them adjusted after the car is fully loaded. Windshield wipers — Will they suddenly give you trouble on a rain - swept park way? Radiator — A mixture cf water and a good rust inhibitor is the best coolant in hot weath er. Fan belt — It’s a good idea to carry a spare. Packing problems are in tho bag with car . travel know - how. Make a check - list of all essen tial articles before the day you leave. Arrange the articles in ti ers. with the least - used or iast- to-be-used items on the bottom. Try »o eliminate all excess bag gage. The things you forget to bring can be real spoilers. Make sure your license and registration arc correct and up-to-date. A Stitch in Time Are you carrying enough insur ance? Most insurance will not cover that side - trip into Mexi co, so take out some short - terra insurance to cover that part ot your vacation before leaving the country. You won’t enjoy your vacation if you’re worried about whether you turned off the gas. Take a few minutes to inake a list of i- tems to be turned off and servi ces to be stopped before you go. It’s not a bad idea to place valuables in a safe deposit box while you’re gone. This would prevent Junior from releasing the brake when left alone while Mom is shopping. These, anil many others like them, are all valid suggestions stemming from a "woman’s eye view” of the car. On a separate line, engine and chassis parts are assembled. Finally, the body meets the chassis and the two arc bolted together se curely. Final assem bly and last-minute touches completn the car.
