She was unable to attend the program because of death in her family. Deacon Allen substituted for her anj the program was a success. The speaker for the afternoon was Elder Johnson of the Shiloh Apostle Church. He preached an inspiring message titled "The Christian Citizenship." Also on the program was Elder Hancock. The newly elected officers at tending this meeting were John Dixon, president; Cynthia Mebane, secretary; Gaynelle Cooke, asst. secretary; and Wendell Holeman, chairman of the Outreach Commit tee. Cross of S. Alston Ave. She ilso visited relatives in Chapel Hill, Bynum and Pittsboro. Durham Club Happenings HAPPY SOCIAL CLUB MEETS WITH MRS. DOROTHY WALL, ROXBORO ST. The Happy Social Club held its regular monthly meeting with Mrs. Dorothy Wall on S. Rox boro Street. After plans for summer activi ties were discussed Mrs. Wall served refreshments to the follow ing members: Mesdames Dorothy Allen, Callie Ewing, T.illie Leake, Anna Sellars, Gertrude Woods. THE YEAR ROUND GARDEN CLUB MEETS The Year Round Garden Club met May 17 with Mrs. Lillian Far rington as hostess. As the garden gate was opened by Mrs. L. Lipscomb, those present beheld beautiful spring flowers bedecking the dining area in which the meetinv was held. Mrs. Lipscomb read a poem en titled "Life Recipe and My Flow- Due to the illness of the presi dent, Mrs. Hargraves, Mrs. Early Moselv, Vire-president, presided during the business session. The group made plans for the conven tion to be held in August and for the fund raising project sponsor ed by the Beautification Commit tee. Taking the form of a workshop, Mrs. Lena Gates, Mrs. Early Mosc ly and Mrs. Gertrude Long, made floral arrangements to be discus sed by the members in the latter part of the meeting. The student, Vernaline Watson, was selected for a scholarship un der the Fulbright-Hays Act, the basic purpose of which is to in crease mutual understanding be tween people of the United States and the peoples of other coun tries through educational and cul tural exchange. After orientation in Bombay, Miss Watson, who is working on a master's degree in sociology at NCC, will proceed to the school of Kashi Vrdyapith where she will spend one academic year. Miss Watson was graduated from Brawiey High School, Scot land Neck, where she was an honor student, and received a B. A. degree cum laude from NCC in 1964. Dr. Cousin will bring with him a wealth of education which be gan at what is "now known as Roosevelt High School in West Palm Beach, Florioa. From Florida he went to Ohio 'A'here he received the Bachelor of Arts degree in .Philosophy from Central State Col lege in Wilberforce. He later ma triculated to the Boston University School of Theology and obtained the degree of Bachelor of Sacred Theology. An ordained minister in the African Methodist Episcopal Church, Dr. Cousin pastored in Florida, Danville and Norfolk Vir ginia prior to his election as presi dent of Kittreil College an AME church supported school.
