students and one recent gradu
ate have been selected to parti
cipate in summer service pro
jects sponsored by the United
Presbyterian Church, U.S.A.
Two of the participates will
work In New Jersey, two In
Ohio, and one In Michigan.
Otis Jones, a sophomore so
ciology major and psychology
minor from Wake Forest, will
go with Sherle Boone, a sopho
more, also of Wake Forest, to a
neglected neighborhood in Cam
den, N. J., where they will
work out of an old tavern build
ing called "The Point." The
Point will also serve as a resi
dence for the students who will
aid citizens of the area through
teaching, leading recreation,
doing indoor and outdoor work,

ing skills for approximately
100 Negro and white school
children from low-income fami
lies. All three girls are students
at Hillside High School.
The tutorial program began
in three centers in Durham un
der th e sponsorship of Opera
tion Breakthrough. The centers
are located at St. Joseph'* AME
Church, the John Avery Boys
Club and the Edgemount Com
munity Center. They will oper
ate until August 13 and will
provide, free tutoring in read
ing for the selected school chil
dren Monday through Thurs
day each week and special
field trips each Friday.

the tutorial program gave help
with school homework to near
ly 500 youngsters from disad
vantaged homes who were fac
ing dropping out of school
without such help.
Prior to beginning instruc
tion, the volunteer tutor* spent
a week undergoing special
training on how to best teach
and deal with young charge*
from impovished area* of the
city.
