Back in Denver
After 40 Years
NEW YORK—After a 40
year period the National As
sociation for Advancement
of Colored People returns to
Denver, Colo., June 28—July
3, for its 56th annual con
vention to be held in Den
ver was in 1925.
Attending that 16th annual
convention were 215 dele'
gates from 28 states. The 58th
annual convention la expect
ed to draw some 1,500 dele
gates from at least 40 states
and the District of Columbia.
In 1925 there were approxi
mately 6,000 Negroes in the
city and the Ku Klux Klan
was a factor to be reckoned
with. The Negro population
today is about 35,000 In a city

Noted Minister

rend Vernon Johns, renowned
religious leader and former
president of Virginia Theologi
cal Seminary, was buried in his
native Prince Edward County
near Farmville, Va., last week.
Rev. Johns died suddenly in
Washington, D. C., and was
funerallzed from the Taber
nacle Baptist Church "in Peters
burg. Dr. Samuel F. Gandy,
Dean of Howard University
School ot Religion, Dr. F. J.
Bodie, pastor, Tabernacle, Rev.
Gilmore Williams, and Rev.
Wyatt T. Walker all officiated
at the service.
Rev. Johns was at Boydton
TnstUute, Virginia Seminary,
Virginia Union University,
Graduate School of
Theology, and the University
->f Chicago. .
His professional career in
cludes pastorates at Court St.
Baptist Church, Lynchburg;
First Baptist Church, Charles
ton, West Va. (succeeding Dr.
Mordicai Johnson, President-
Emeritus of Howard Universi
ty); and bexter Avenue Bap
tist Church. Montgomery, Ala.
(Succeeded by Dr. Martin Lu
ther King).
He has been director of
Baptist Educational Center* la
New York and Baltimore, Presi
dent of Virginia Theological
Seminary, and Acting Minister
at Virginia State College.
Rev. Johns was the first Ne
gro to have a sermon publish
ed (1926) in the annual edi
i tion of "Best Sermons" edited
by Joseph Fort Nevton, pastor,

The Rev. Melvin Chester
Swann, pastor delivered the
eulogy.
Mrs. Link succumbed at
Lincoln Hospital, Friday,
June 25, following an ex
tended illness.
She was born In Seymore,
North Carolina, but lived In
Durham for a long number
of yean. For over 50 years
she had been a member of
St. Joseph's where she ser
ved as a member of Steward
es» Board No 2.
Surviving are two sons,
Earnest and Alexander: one
adopted daughter, Miss Mar
garet Stewart Link, one
brother, Joseph Royal and
several other relatives.

his "white wife.'" However, the
Klan has committed a notorious
error—Mrs. Russel Is a Negro.
Russell is shown presenting
a citation to Bob Logan one of
the company's salesmen.
The front of the leaflet,
which is approximately five and
a half by eight and a half
inches states:

The back of the leaflet con
tains a 56-line verse, "The
Saddest Story Ever Told." by
"Hon. Oliver Allstorm." "When
a white girl marries a negro,"
the verse begins, "her sun of
life goes down, And daring
■spots of sin appear on her white
wedding gown...
Near the end of the selec
t'on, Allstorm wrote, "This
black and white, pre-miptial
mess, this racial sucicide; Must
be forbidden by the law, men
must find racial pride!"

who was separated from her
husband, Mrs. Hollingsworth
was found wounded in her car
which was parked at 216 Poplar
St.—Allen's residence— shortly
before 8 p. m. Sunday. She had
been shot six times with a .23

ly after being taken to Lincoln
Hospital.

The University of California
Dr. Grady D. Davis has re
ceived a National Science Foun
dation Fellowship to pursue
post-graduate study in a Sum
mer Institute in Psychology at
the University of California at
Berkeley. The institute runs
eight weeks, from June 28-AU
gust 20. Dr. Davis leaves for
California, Sunday, June 27.
Dr. Davis is Pastor of Union
Baptist Church, Durham, and
Visiting Professor in Psycho
logy, Shaw University in Ral
eigh. He holds the A. B. degree
from Shaw University; the B. D.
degree from Andover-Newton
Theological School, Massachu
setts; and the Ph. D. degree
from Boston University in the
area of psychology and religion.
He is married to the former
Miss Dorothy M. Hicks of Ral
eigh and they have five child
ren.

MAN HELD FOR
SLAYING WOMAN
WITH STICK
Swade W. Younger, 64, of
114 Peachtree St., was bound
over to the grand Jury Mon
day In connection with the
death of Mrs. Geneva Wil
liam* Morehead of the same
address who was found dead
Sunday.
Younfer, who had been ac
cused of killing the 40-year*
old woman with a stick, was
asked in Recorder's Court
for his plea by Prosecutor
W. J. Brogden. He kesitated,
then pled guilty.
Mrs. Marehead was found
dead in her home at 1:13 p.
m. Sunday by Arlene Peace
of 111 2 Feachtree Strfet. The
Peace woman told police she
had asked Younger about
Mrs. Morehead and he aaid
she was asleep in bed. She
Said she last saw Younger
leaving the house where the
body was found.
Dr. D. R. Perry, County
Coroner, aaid Mlrs. Marehead
died from shock and a frac
tured skull and that she had
been dead about 12 hours
when found.
