SNCC Launches Voter Drive In Rural So. Ga. NEWTON Ga.—A team of organizers from the Atlanta based Student Non-violent Co ordinating Committee (SNCC) has begun a voter regiatration drive in the rural, South Ga, area, known as "Bad" Baker County. Nekton and Baker County are the home of the infamous 1943 Screws case in which the then Sheriff Claude M. Screws and other officers were indicted and prosecuted for beating to death a handcuffed young Negro me- I chanic, Bobby Hall. Sheriff Screws was convicted but re leased by the United States Supreme Court which ruled that his prosecutors had not estab lished the Sheriff intended to deprive Hall of any Constitu t'onal rights by killing him. The Sheriff was tried again and ac quitted, and was elected to the Georgia State Senate in 1958. SNCC workers say the coun ty's Negroes still remember the Screws case, and say that the present sheriff. L. Warren Johnson, and his three deputies have killed "at least one Ne gro apiece." Negroes are nearly 60% of the county's population, and more than half of the voting age residents of the county are Negroes. Fewer than 300 Negroes are registered voters, however. The county is a poor one, and 71% of all of the county's families earn less than $3,000 a year. Almost half of the Ne gro families here earn less than SI,OOO annually, but the only four college students in the county are Negroes. The Sheriff, his borther and chief deputy Ben Johnson, his oart-time deputy and son Her bert Johnson, and full time deputy Hilton Moore have been accused of taking more than $20,000 in "fees" from traffic bonds posted in 1964.
