-THE CAROLINA TQOB SATURDAY, JULY K IMS 4-A Jehovah's Witnesses To Give Youth Bible Training In N. Y. By O. M. Btakes Should the Bible be water ed down for youths? Not ac cording to Jehovah's Witnes aea. To prove it, thousands of Witnesses from the north eastern U. S. are bringing their children with them to New York's Yankee Stadium the week of August 24-29 to listen to six days of Bible discussion during their "Word of Truth" convention. One such family group is Mr.&Mrs. Walter Rouse, and thefc- 3 children, who live at Route 3, Box 390, Durham. Thousands of families like them will be filling Yankee Stadium. A large part of the audience will be small chil dren who will sit quiteiy in their seats through two and HOT WEATHER Comfort During these hot and humid days our air conditioned chapel is always cool and comfortable. When charged with plac ing undue restrictions on their children, Witness par ents point to the present i noisy generation of teenagers with its empty indifference, its frug and watusi. They ask, 'Could most tension filled adolescents, with jazz-blaring radios glued to their ears, listen quiteiy to even five minutes of scriptual instruc tion'? Said Rouse: "We have a number of small children who regularly attend the five weekly Bible instruction meetings at our Kingdom Hall, so they have been al ready well trained to listen quietly." As a matter of fact, "he said, "it is now an accepted fact that children born to our missionaries learn to speak several languages at a ten derder age. We heard of one eight year old girl who could speak and understand Siamese, Finnish, English and Chinese! A young mind able to master such difficult languages certainly has the capacity to absorb intensive Bible training." Mrs. Rouse added: "If a child can learn how to be a criminal before he reaches the age eight, then a very ten der age is none too soon to start teaching him to live by Bible principles. Some par. ents believe this can be ac complished by sending the child off once a week for an hour of religious instruction with other youths. The wit- j nesses believe this is the parents' daily responsibility." She continued: "The gener al trend of Bible instruction today is to give children coloring books or reduce the Scriptures to words in the moutlis of the comic-strip characters. One such book ask, 'What's Bugging Ole Pharaoh'? and pokes fun at a serious narrative. Pharaoh is no cartoon character to our youths. We patiently help them grasp the deeper mean ing of such Bible accounts.' The Witnesses have good ■ J In ' ZH : I reason to b* prdud ot their youngsters:m>tafoly well be* haved. Hundreds of such youthfully trained men and women are helping to staff the Witnesses' 90 branch offi ces throughout the world. Many more hundreds are serving as missionaries all over the globe and as the religious group adds tens of thousands to its ranks each year, more opportunities are opening up for youths. The Rouse youngsters hope to share in similar work one day. REV. T. KILGORE KEYNOTER AT PASTORS DRIVE RALEIGH—The Rev. Thomas E.
