WSRC Goes to FM This Week
Announcement was made as
the Carolina Times went to
press that WSRC-FM would be
going on the air this weekend,
probably as of 5 A.M. Friday
morning. According to the sta
tion management, WSRC-FM
will operate from 5 A.M. until
11 P.M. or 12 midnight each
day, duplicating on the FM
broadcast band the regular
WSRC-FM programs during the
day and offering a series of
similar programs on FM only
after dark.
WSRC FM is the second FM
station to be licensed in Dur
ham, and is reported to be
the first Negro-programmed
full-time FM service on the air
anywhere in North Carolina.
The FM station will operate on
107.1 megacylcles, and will
have a power of almost 3,000
watts The coverage of the FM
station is calculated to equal
or slightly exceed the current
WSRC-AM coverage.
Preliminary plans for eve
ning programming indicate
largely church broadcasts on
Sunday night, but the Monday
thru Saturday evening sched-

Station manager Jim Mayes
revealed that Ray Henderson,
known to radio fans as "Dr.
Jocko," will be the announcer
on duty at night. He will han
dle a majority of the station
produced FM programs, and is
being added to the station's
staff.
WSRC-FM has offered to
broadcast the Monday night
Durham City Council meetings
live from the council chambers,
but Mayor Grabarek has stated
that some council members be
lieve a broadcast might be a
factor to limit free and open
discussion of issues It is hoped
by the FM station management
that the objections can be over
come.

reports of the last meeting
were read by the secretary,
Mrs Irene Johnson. Plans were
discussed for the Christmas
party to be held on December
13, at which time exchange of
Christmas gifts will be fea
tured

wrapping and a beautiful ar
rangement of Christmas deco
ration.
