Sammy Davis Discusses Plans And Goal for His IV Show NEW YORK—Three months ago, Sammy Davis, Jr. told NBC Radio Network's "Moni tor" that he would never do a weekly television series—that he preferred "mixing up" his appearances on such shows as "Hullabaloo," "The Dean Mar tin Show," "Bonanza" and "The Man from U. N. Q. L. E." On Friday, Jan. 7, "The Sammy Davis Jr. Show" will have its premiere on the NBC Television Network (8:30-9:30 p.m. EST; in color). Obviously women aren't the only ones who have the prerogative to change their minds. Sammy claims he didn't real ly change his mind "I made that statement because I never breamed I'd be offered my own show," he explains "I thought such a circumstance was un attainable. When NBC offered me the weekly series, stating I could have complete control over the show, I flipped. There was'n a question of no or may be The answer was an imme diate yes." He wants to be able to move in many directions on the show. "That's why I chose my pro ducer and director (Joe Hamil ton and Clark Jones, respect ively) with great care," says Sammy. "They had to agree with my concept of what I feel the show should be. I want it to look fairly loose with a feeling of spontaneity about it. I want parts to look unrehears ed even though we may spend days rehearsing them. I want freedom to move in every type of format. If I want to dance, I'll dance: sing—l'll sing; act in a sketch, then I'll do it. In other words, I'm going to be in this show. I'm not going to sing just two songs, introduce the guests, grab the check and run for the bank. If this show fails, I want the public, the critics and everyone else to look to one person—me." As the first Negro to star in a full-network television se ries of his own, Sammy is aware that his is a gigantic breakthrough. Yet, he doesn't feel he is under any particular pressure. "It's no different," says Sam my, "than when I was the first Negro to play Miami Beach or any of the other places formerly closed to mem bers of my race. I've lived with that kind of pressure all my life. The only pressure I feel now is . . . will the public buy what I have to sell, which is my talent? That is all I hope to be judged by. After all, I'm an entertainer who is Negro. I'm not a Negro entertainer. There's a world of difference in those two."
