He is married and has three children. In recent years, the Ford Foundation has become In creasingly conferred wit hprob- lems of Negro higher educa tion. Past grants include $6 million to the United Negro College Fund, and sl3 million to thirteen Negro colleges in the South for scholarships and faculty improvement. In addi tion, the Foundation granted $7 million to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation to establish a National Achieve ment Scholarship Program, un der which about 200 scholar ships a year are awarded to promising Negroes to attend colleges of their choice. May Proves a Busy Month For Sr. Citizens May was truly Senior Citi zens month for Senior Citizens at St Titus Episcopal Church. Aside from the regular weekly meetings and the monthly birthday party, there were the following activities: (1) Attend ing a program given by the Recreation Department in honor of Durham's Senior Ci tizens* May 14: (2) Presenting a skit in a Variety Show by various Senior Citizens groups of Durham. May 18; (3). Wor shipping coporately at St. Ti tus' Church. May 21; (4). At tending a called meeting to hear a national officer. May 29 and (5). Participating in a Fo rum. "The Senior Citizens Speak," May 30. At one of the regular meet ings student nurses from Duke University g?ve talks and shewed n film on Glaucoma. Attending the Forum were the following delegites: Mes dames Mamie Dawson. Bessie Dobv. Flonnie Goodloe, Leila Graham. Julia Harris. Sadie Postles. and Addie Williams. Mrs. Dohy was spokesman. Other Senior Citizens of St. Titus were in attendance. Among them Mesdames Mamie Merritt, Mary Newby and Char ity Rivera were delegates from other groups. The National officer who visited the chapter was Dr. Lawrence A. Oxley, Director of Special Projects for the Na tional Council of Senior Citi zens. This was the chapter's first visit by a national officer. Burns, Jr., Senior Vice President of Central Carolina Bank and Trust Company has been appointed to head the In dustrial Division of the Fall's United Fund Campaign. H. C. Cranford," Jr., 1967 Campaign Chairman who made the ap pointment said: "We are de lighted that Bill Burns has ac cepted this major responsibility in Durham's United Fund Cam paign organization. Bill has an outstanding record of service to the Durham Community, and I know he will be a tremen dous asset to the 1967 Cam paign." , Burns is a native of Greens boro, where he lived until mov ing to Durham in 1960. He is a graduate of North Carolina State College and of the Ston ier Graduate School of Bank ing at Rutgers. He was named Senior Vice President of Cen tral Carolina Bank and Trust Company in January 1962. At present he is treasurer and director of Durham Rotary Club: a director of Durham's Merchants Association: treas urer and member of the Ex ecutive Committee of the Chamber of Commerce; a mem ber of the Advisory Board of the Salvation Army Citadel; a Trustee of College Foundation, Inc.; and 'a Director of the Durham YMCA. Burns has given extensive service on the United Fund Board of Directors and under stands the difficulties and joys of fund-raising. He has worked as a solicitor, a group chairman and a division chairman in past United Fund Campaigns.
