Have something to My on a definite subject or theme. 2. Know your audience and plan to keep the interest of the listeners, and be sure you are dressed properly for the occasion—white tie, black tie, and business suit. 3. Check in order to avoid embarrassing moments by re porting to the chairman, check ing the microphone, and look ing around the platform. 4. Make a good beginning by being friendly, but not apole getic, use smiles and pauses, challenge the audience to ac tion, and then outlinen the action it should take. 5. Develop the subject skill fully, so as to maintain a high level of interest. 6. Build a strong conclusion by being brief, restating the main points, reviewing the ad vantages of action, ending the speech within the alloted time. 7. Harvey, Executive Director, Winston-Salem Urban League announces that Fellowships for graduate study are available for the 1969-1970 academic year. The Urban League Fellow ship program which is financed by a grant from the Carneigie of New York, is designed to train graduate students for careers in Urban League service. There are several two-year Fel lowships in Community Or ganization. The other Fellow ships will be awarded for one year of study in any one of the following fields: community organization, social work ad ministration, educational and vocational guidance and coun selling, human relations, per sonnel, economics, labor and industrial relations, employ ment counselling, political science and social research. Amounts up to $30,000 - depending on the need • will be awarded for one year of full-time study. For persons enrolled in a two-year course leading to a degree, Fellowship awards will be considered for a second year, providing the quality of the student's work merits renewal. The Fellowships are open to all persons who meet the qualifications. Selection criteria include: a)graduation from an ac credited college or university; b) the potential and interest demonstrated by the candidate in the field of human rights and a commitment and desire to seek a professional career in this field; and c) special attributes such as unusual ability, good character and capacity for leadership in community affairs, social ac tion, civil rights and intergroup relations.
