Eagles Trip Virginia St* 20-9 NCCU Moves into First Place With Sat.'s Win Over Trojans North Carolina Central Uni versity's Julian Martin con tinued to lead the Eagles in scoring, with two touchdown passes from Herman Mathews in Saturdays 20-'9 victory over Virginia State. The tagies. still undefeated after three tough CIAA con ference games, outrushed and out passed the Trojans, but Coach Oeorge Quiett save the lion's share of the credit to an outstanding defense. Defense captain Frank Bul lock and defensive tackle Sam Singletary got plaudits from their coach in a post-game con ference. After viewing the game films. Quiett had more names to praise. "Most of tile credit for our pass defense goes to Pete Quinn and Charles Bellinger our outstandine corner hacks. They held Virginia State to two pass receptions in fourteen at tempts." Quiett said He also added linebacker Robert Hollo way to the list of defensive stars. For the offense. Quiett sin gled out Martin as a star. He called the New Bern native's pass receptions spectacular. "And the films showed that Dou? Wilkerson. our All- American tackle, was moving their star defensive tackle all over the field." Quiett said. Playing left tackle on the Tro jan defensive team, opposite Wilkerson at right, was James Mitchell, who was listed last fear on the Pittsburgh Cour ier's All-American roster. Set for Homecoming October 30-Nov. 1 PETERSBURG Homecom ing Day festivities are expect ed' to attract several thousand alumni and friends to the Vir ginia State College campus for three days, October 30 and 31 and November 1. According to an annotincc inentment from B. F. Dabney, Piroctor of Development and Public Affairs at the college, scheduled activities will get underway on Thursday. October 31 when the Homecoming Jazz Concert, fea turing Clark Terry (Jazz). Poaches and Herb (Rock), and Muddy Water (Blues), will take place in the New Daniel Hall gym at 8 P.M. Special tickets will be required to attend this mnsical attraction The Dawn Dance, always a special highlight of homecom ing day activities, will be held on campus in the early morn ing hours of Saturday, Novem ber 1. Also on Saturday, plans are hcing made on the campus for n parade through the streets of the city of Petersburg. The VSC marching band, floats from many of the campus male and female organizations, and mem bers of the First ROTC Bri gade, commanded by Cadet Lt. Colonel Sterling Weaver of Em poria. Virginia, will be the featured attractions in the line of march. The annual meeting of the National Alumni Association of the college will follow at 10:43 A.M.
