Modern Garden Pest Brought From France As A Gourmet Food About 100 years ago, a Frenchman hungry for a deli cacy of his native land set off a chain of events which now costs his weaker-stomached Pacific Coast neighbors sever al million dollars a year. The immigrant, who shall remain nameless to protect his descendents from the wrath of their neighbors, imported and turned loose in the California vineyards a colony of creatures destined to become one of the worst garden pests the Eur opean brown snail. Like many of his countrymen, he liked to eat this kind of snail.
