Modern Garden Pest
Brought From France
As A Gourmet Food
About 100 years ago, a
Frenchman hungry for a deli
cacy of his native land set off
a chain of events which now
costs his weaker-stomached
Pacific Coast neighbors sever
al million dollars a year.
The immigrant, who shall
remain nameless to protect his
descendents from the wrath of
their neighbors, imported and
turned loose in the California
vineyards a colony of creatures
destined to become one of the
worst garden pests the Eur
opean brown snail.
Tnis inch-long, dry-land mol
lusk today infests gardens at
night causing damage. Despite
this, the Frenchman who start
ed it all was motivated by
pleasure. Like many of his
countrymen, he liked to eat
this kind of snail.
