8A I—THE CAROLINA T.MES SATITRDAY, APRIL 3, 1971 Theresa McQuaig Tells Story Of Nightingales Dear Friends, At an early age, I had a great interest in Gospel Music. The first record I was able to understand and come to love was "Songs of Praises" by the Sensational Nightingales. The record was a gift to my father. I had heard many reccrds be fore, but never one it that time meant so much to me. I grew to love the Night .ngales' Music and followed their re cordings ever since. However, never did 1 dream at that time one day I would haw the privilege to mt?et The Nightingales. 1 always thought as most people did when people became involved in professional work they for go! about the unknown ones. Meeting the Nightingales have only proved me wrong. A few years ago the guitarist and tenor voice, Joseph Wallace, whom resides here in Durham, joined Union Baptist Church. He took an interest, not only in just com ing to church, but being a part of it, and always wanting to help. As a result of this, he formed a group, The Galelettes, derived from the Nightingales Fan Club in Durham. North Carolina. The Galelettes were a com posure of young people, in terested in Gospel Music. They survived many happy days dur ing their travelings. The Night ingales encouraged and helped strengthened them in the right way. For example they appear ed with them at Durhams'Cen tral Civic Center one summer. For the past two weeks they enlightened Durham and people that heard them for miles and miles around. They gave their time to different churches, donating the money to the needed causes. They al so donated money to crippled and needy ones a part from the churches. Even. 1 year they celebrate their anniversary in Durham. They belong to Durhi n, and I'm for one happy they do. Their latest recording, It's Gonna Rain, speaks for itself. The Senational Nightingales are surely one of the great messengers derived from cen tories ago. Listen to them, they're tell ing the story. Nightingale Fan, Thersa .McQuaig Ray Thompson Receives E. S. Barrett Award Ray Thompson received a standing ovation last Friday night in Winston-Salem, but because of the iliness which has crippled hi: i physically for a number of years, the veteran educator was not there to hear and see how the members of his profession responded to his name. In Durham, Thompson is known as a contributor to the letters columns of the local newspaper; as an educator, a member of the faculty of North Carolina Central Uni versity since 1951; and as an intellectual stimulant, the founder and for nearly a de cade the principal mover of North Carolina Central's "Sack Lunch" group, which met informally each Thursday to discuss issues in education, politics, human relations, science or any other topic a member wished to discuss.
