FSU Photo by John Henderson "Lady Sings the Blues" Gets Oscar Nomination LOS ANGELES - Gil As key reached a personal peak in his 25-year music career when he was nominated last week for an Oscar by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The Academy Award nomi nation of Askey cities his work as musical supervisor on the Motown-produced motion pic-, ture into film work, Askey has been associated with Motown Record Corporation and its ar tists for nearly a decade. Cur rently, he serves as musical director for Dianna Ross, who recieved an Oscar nomination for "Best Act- ;ss" as a result of her work in the film. . "I never dreamed I'd ever be considered fox something as big as this'IVskey confesses. "But if someone somewhere thinks that I have that much to offer, thartks a tot." Askey, la Boston Conserva tory of Music-trianed compo ser and arranger, learned $f his nomination in Las Vegas where he is conducting the orchestra for Miss Ross' smash, SRO, three-week engagement ait Cae sars Palace. "I've been around so long without any honors, and I thought it was just ' some kind of jive when they told me," Askey recalls. "I do feelgood about it." Bo,n in Austin, Te xas, and formally trained at major eas tern music conservatories, As key, an excellent trumpet play er learned the music business from the ground floor up when he apprenticed in the big bands of Lloyd Price, Buddy Johnson and Count Basie. He also play ed in the house band at Har lem's Apollo Theatre arid wrote music for some of the old Larry Steele shows at the steel Pier in Atlantic City, N.J. Eventually Askey graduated into the show business big leagues when His arrangements attracted the attention of some of America's top pop vocal groups and when he signed on with Motown to write and arrange for such top acts as The Supremes and then Miss Ross. His gut reaction to the news of his nomination was typical of the cool, unruffled and 1m- perturable Askey. "I lov e life,' he said, "because life is beauti ful, and music is beautiful. Music is my whole life. So I'll just keepon writing some more music. "I guess I should be more excited. But I keep remember ing this band teacher I had in high school who always told us to never say you're going somewhere until you're there. So I guess that's how I feel about it. I won't say I really got the nomination until I win the Academy Award. Hawks End Spell, Top Golden State ATLANTA Lou Hud son scored 27 points and Herm Gilliam 24 Saturday night to lead the Atlanta Hawks to their first National Basketball Asso ciation victory of the season over the Golden State Warriors, 117-113. Golden State had been the only NBA team the Hawks could not beat, winning three straight. The victory also was Attentate sixth in a row, the Hawks' longest winning streak of the season. (By DICK MOORE) jfc "We didn't expect to np them off the court," said A4rX coach Warren Reynolds, shortly after the Aggies had blasted Howard University, 86-62 for the second straight MEAC Tournament chajjjvf pionship. But that's exactly what happened Saturday night Beaten twice during the reg ular season by the Bisons, the fired up Aggies ripped and raced to their payoff win in impressive fashion before 8, 800 partisan fans in the fledgling, but highly success ful MEAC tournament in Duke University Indoor Stad ium. "After we got a comfor table lead, we went to our control offense," said Rey nolds; in his first year as the Aggies' head coach, "and then put more pressure on Howard." When that happened, with about 16 minutes left in the game, it became no contest With Little All -American candidate William "June" Harris directing A&Ts floor game, and with suitable fire power by swift guard James Outlaw and exciting sopho more sensation Allen Spruill, the Aggies completely frus trated Howard's methodical patting of the ball. In the consolation game, Marvelous Marvin Webster, Morgan State's 6-11 enforcer, led the Bears to a 98-97 vic tory over the top seeded Maryland State Hawks. Webster pulled down a rec ord 23 rebounds, blocked nine shots, and scored nineteen points for his best perform ance of the tourney. For his efforts in guiding the Assies to the title, Rey nolds was named outstanding coach of the tournament, and Harris, whose last second shot against Maryland had put the Aggies into the finals, was named the outstanding player of the tournament. A&T shot a blazing 61.6 percent from the floor in the championship game. Mar. 3, 10, 17, 1973 Multiple Use Is Madj Of Wooden Toy Train JANICE CHRISTENSEN Families with a "where to put it" storage problem, can take a tip from Mrs. Elwyn Harris, a , Columbus County extension homemaker. Her solution: dual purpose furniture. One of those dual pur pose items is a home made wooden toy train made of sturdy boards. Each of the three sep arate units is painted a different color, says Mrs. Elaine Blake, home economics extension agent. And each of those units can be used as a chair, as extra storage space, or as a child's toy. When playtime is over, the Harris' small son puts his "train" away and stores his other toys in it, the agent notes. Also in the same room, the family has a free standing storage unit, consisting of closet space, shelves and a desk. The unit helps to screen a play area from i the sleeping area and offers needed extra storage, Mrs. Blake observes. BAG OF CHEER Many senior citizens and shut-ins are remem bered during the holi days, but may be for gotten during other times of the year. So members of the Green Hill Extension Homemakers Club, Ala mance County, are making plans to take a "bag of cheer" to per sons all through the year. A bag of cheer, explains Amelia Watts, associate home econom ics extension agent, is filled with fruit, and delivered with a heart full of warmth. PULL TOGETHER By doing her own thing, a young Rocking ham 4-H'er saved her family $80. The teenager, Debra Tate, refinished her bed room furniture, antiqued a desk and chair and made covers for two chairs, explains Jane Stuart, home economics exten sion agent. If it wasn't for the home furnishings project "Pull Your Room Together" my room might not have had the refinishing touches it needed, Debra affirmed. jfci HbSm Ban. Billing Errors Occur, Here're Steps to Take RALEIGH Although it would be nice if it never happened, billing errors do occur. What then? First, notify the store or credit card issuer immediately, advises Mrs. Justine Rozier, extension home manage ment specialist, North Carolina State Uni versity. Tell them of the mistake. Ask for the name of the person you are dealing with and make a note of the name as well as the date. You may need this informa tion later. If your contact is in writing, it is best to send a separate letter rather than including your com plaint with the bill. Remember to include your credit card number. Keep a copy of the letter. Send copies of the bill or other documents, but keep the originals yourself. Read all bills care fully when you receive them, and never pay for any part of a bill you do not owe. Do not pay for merchandise you have not received. If you have difficulty in getting correction of billing errors, send a factual letter to the credit manager or president of the company. Explain your problem in detail in a businesslike manner, leaving out any unkind remarks. Include copies of bills, sales slips and similar information. If you are still unable to settle the complaint, send the details and evidence of your efforts to the local Credit Bureau. Send a carbon copy of this letter to the merchant who has not corrected the billing error. With accurate rec ords and a businesslike manner, a person is Sat.
